Re: Exclusive Seasonic Promo Deals at Newegg for SPCR
Sigh... I wish Newegg shipped to Australia. And I missed out on the Kingwin Stryker going for $140 on Amazon the other day! =[

You guys have it good in the US with Newegg and mail in rebates. Cheapest I can get the Seasonic X-460 in Aus is ~$180AUD, and that's before shipping. Can't get the Kingwin anywhere in Aus either.

Won't know till you try. Only takes a few minutes, so why don't you be the guinea pig and let us all know! ;]
BTW for posterity's sake, if anyone is interested in how to oil a fan, here is a good guide.

Re: Afterburner: fan control does not work automatically
Might have something to do with the order programs are loaded. Maybe Afterburner is being loaded faster than CCC, so Catalyst overrides the Afterburner settings. BTW, how are you starting Afterburner? Via the built in setting, Start menu/startup, or task scheduler?

Re: CPU, GPU noise?
Oh right, so the rubber bungee absorbs the noise of the spinning? Good idea. The elastic doesn't absorb any noise, it just prevents vibrations from transferring to the case. There's a massive thread in the drives section of the forum detailing how people implemented drive suspension in their own co...

Hard drives are quite hardy, I doubt the drives died due to heat, maybe it was another issue. Anyone else have an opinion on this?

Re: Building my new rig : why undervolt? Seems dumb.
You can try getting this PWM fan controller . Its supposed to convert four pin PWM fan to three pin. I've had trouble getting it to work with my 5870 though, I think it may have to do with how AMD implemented their fan PWM signalling though. Nvidia cards may be okay though. There are a couple of oth...

Re: Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 very silent and not even vapor-x
Even when set to 0% or any other value below 25%, gpu-z still reports it as if 25% was set (and the fan is indeed spinning even at 0%). So this is definitely a "hardwired" limitation of the fan but I guess 25% should be good enough for almost everyone even here on SPCR if silent idle is what they a...

Just putting it out there, the X-400 has 700-something watt rated parts. So as long as it has decent ventilation, it can be driven fairly hard.

Re: Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 very silent and not even vapor-x
You can set fanspeed down to 0% in Afterburner, but you have to set your own fan speed curves under settings. Most fans are PWM controlled anyway though, so even if you set 0%, the fan will still likely be spinning.

If you have a small low-powered system in mind, then I do recommend the Solo. Only issues are space (therefore, a small system with limited drive/expansion space), and heat (so, lower-powered systems are more suitable).

Re: P182 beat up to all hell... Now what?
P182 is nice, but there definitely are improvements in the P183. No fan getting in the way in the bottom chamber, support for CPX power supplies (those two points are arguable though), cut out for CPU backplate, SSD mounting points in the upper drive cage, eSATA instead of Firewire (again, arguable ...

I hate relying on physical fan controllers. I want to set up my cooling system to be automated, so I don't have to remember to reach over and turn a knob when I start doing something computationally intensive; or fry my computer if I forget.

It's definitely _not_ silent, but it lives in my basement. I can't see much need for a silent server unless you live somewhere where it has to be placed in an office or some other occupied room. Well, I stand corrected. You can always contact AC and ask if you can buy the 40mm fan as a spare part. AC themselves sell a whole range of spare parts already, such as CPU/GPU cooler fans, RAM sinks etc.

I'd love to be able to control half a dozen fans. Most mobos have at most three controllable fans, with an extra one or two ports that only allow for RPM readings.

Re: AMD 6800 Series + Tech Day in LA
I suspect companies that have non-reference board for the 6850 are simply going to share the PCB between 6870/6850. I mean, why not? Cut down costs. A plus for us as well, as it means better compatibility.

Re: AMD 6800 Series + Tech Day in LA
Hm, looks like XFX is sharing the PCB between the 6870/6850, maybe? Power delivery is on the left, just like the 6870, and it's missing things here and there (such as a second PCIe power connector). I'm surprised the VRM's are cooled by such a puny heatsink, maybe the VRM's run cooler on the 6-series?

Arctic cooling have temp controlled fans, but they come in standard PC 80/92/120 sizes. I think you're out of luck in terms of 40mm fans, unfortunately.

Somewhat OT, but I have a question about video card electrical noise...I own a 5870, and while under normal use I can't really hear any noise coming from the card itself, when I use H264 DXVA decoding along with soft subtitles (that is, not encoded into the video itself), a very distinct squealing n...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide
Do you have VRM temperatures on load? The Gelid review kept the stock cooling plate, so I'm curious as to how well the VRM sink that comes with the Gelid cooler performs. It's possible that when the VRMs hit near the 120C limit, the card begins to throttle itself, and therefore the GPU chip itself r...

Hm, interesting. Only the 6870's power delivery has been moved. I didn't know the 6850 VRMs are still at the back of the card. And bad news; looks like the chip has been moved even further forward towards the connectors, compared to the 5850. If you compare to the 5850: http://www.pcgameshardware.co...

If your drive is connected via eSATA, then the drive should spin down according to your system power management settings. If you're running Windows, you can use HDDScan to force the drive to spin down.

At this point, I'd buy on price. Which one can you get cheaper? While the 6870 is indeed slower than a 5870, it gets pretty damn close, and it has extras like HDMI 1.4, a new tessellation unit etc. Quoting the WSGF review : Radeon HD 6870 offered approximately 95% of the performance of the Radeon HD...
