I had an AMD Athlon 2400+ with a Geforce 4 ti 4200 and I couldn't pull off 720p. Also it idled a lot hotter and less efficiently than my current setup (no CnQ, older gaming card etc...). Best bet is to sink a couple bucks into a new pc. Or install XP media center on the P2 (that is what you need to ...

at or sleep commands on a Linux box, I think windows has at as well, but who knows how useful it is. I'm sure there are several full featured alarm programs for Windows. But really a computer is not a good substitute for an alarm clock, believe me I've tried. Get a new one and a couple 9v batteries.

Very strange and aggravating problem. I really don't see how a heat sink can have a 'restart' feature considering it doesn't interface with the PC in any way. Perhaps it's the fan, if it stops your motherboard may decide it's time to shut down. Maybe monitor that. If it is the fan, check your fan co...

To be honest, I don't know if you should have ordered the monitor so quickly. As you say, you are not acquainted with different panel technologies, so it's quite possible that TN will annoy you to hell and back, with its tiny vertical viewing angles and colour shifting. It's also possible that the ...

The 206 is a great monitor too, and the successor should only be better. 20" should remain pretty fast for gaming too. Enjoy

Re: Nvidia Quadro NVS 285
My vote is for a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 285. Max power consumption is 18 watts. Has dual DVI or VGA, depending on the cable that comes with your card. and 128MB ram. I picked one up on eBay for $12 USD; has been working very well with my Debian Box. This card is PCIe. Runs Google earth at 1600x1200 just...

Muddy bass is a major problem with all of these cheaper logitech speakers. I can't speak for the more expensive models (150+) but I'm pretty sure you want to look at different companies when you reach that budget. I use the X530 now and I previously used the Z640. The X530 overall sounds better. Cle...

My kill-a-watt arrived and it shows my system draws ~112W @ idle. OUCH. This is on a linux fc4 system with only a few small services running (slimserver, samba, etc). Going to have to track down where that juice is going, I'd really like to get it down to 60w, but that seems almost impossible comin...

Re: Best CPU for quiet computer
Well, 1700+ x 2 is 3400+ haha. So get an X2 4000+ or whatever. Better yet get a BE2350 or BE2400 like I didcrazyox wrote: but that will require me to have approximately the twice equivalent cpu power as my current Athlon XP1700+

Sure people will have lots to say about your PSU and your ram and your 20 hard disks, but personally here is what I have: Reconsider the Be2300, if you're doing a lot of processing getting a stronger CPU may save you time and power. I wonder if you're doing editing too? There is a great article on T...

You're talking about a rather large investment only to save pennies a day. I suggest you wait for something like those spiffy new 8-30w AMD chips if you really want low power draw. Personally I'd consider my performance requirements over the efficiency at idle. Other than that, the integrated video ...

I'm not so worried about the temperature of my CPU. ASUS PC probe tells me it idles 28-30C and while playing it only hits 38-40C. I'm mainly concerned about noise and the ambient temperature within the case. Keeping it un-vented seems better for the movement of air in the case with the intake behind...

Inexpensive, fairly quiet, boring P182 build
My first computer build. I went for fairly inexpensive, quiet and cool. http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/9046/buildaq4.jpg You can see what's in it below in my signature. It is fairly cluttered (and I keep a lot of old/unused hardware laying around inside), but this is just fine for me... Temperat...

First time poster here :) Kinda hard to say, but you don't seem *too* unhappy with the current speed. Perhaps it would be beneficial just to reformat and wait for the quad core cpus to come down in price for a large step upgrade. You shouldn't need more than a 450 watt psu, especially if you don't g...
