Re: Scythe Ninja 4: A Legend Reborn
My understanding of the higher power requirements of Sky Lake is that this is due to the better GPU and that if you aren't using the GPU then you may not see the higher power consumption One leaked review showed that 6700K was using 60W less than 4790K at default clocks. Perhaps they bumped TDP to ...

Interesting test
Mechanics of it is really crude. You will definitely get more result by manual undervolting.
One hope was that S models are selected to need less default voltage (and would consequently undervolt and overclock better). Still the difference isn't worth the asked price

Re: Can't get below 40W idle on Haswell CPU.
Based on what you say something must be wrong. I suspect it is related to the motherboard, but resetting BIOS didn't make any difference neither, I have to recheck that and the hardware. From my linux days I remember having a bit similar trouble. CPU in idle would drop clocks but not volts. Wrong k...

Re: CPU for a silent high performance PC - i7 4790 or 4790k?
2) The 4790K has a TDP of 88w while the 4790 sports 84w TDP. Is that significant when planning a silent rig? I'm going to use Scythe Kotetsu as the cooler. Unlike all previous K processors, 4790K has faster clocks than its sibling (4/4.4GHz vs 3.6/4GHz), leading to increase in performance and power...

Price is way too much. Year ago I got 6950 for 300 euros, now I would get 50% more performance for 50% more price? The only thing that really catches my eye is excellent BF3 performance. BF3 being the only game I play (that is somewat limited by videocard). And that with first drivers, could even im...

I went for Antec mini p180. To be fair its size is almost like full ATX
But it fits any size graphic card and is able to cope with large amounts of heat
(why does it say Asus p180 mini in poll? I missed it and voted for "other")

Re: Heatpipes are useless at low CFM?
I think this sounds right. Heatpipes don't work as well (don't transfer heat) when heatsink fin temperature is high. I think I've seen tests where they overload heatpipe heat transfer capability and heatsink temperature skyrockets. It work other way round too. My internal explanation would be that t...

Re: Low power multi-monitor graphics card(s)
5770 I had, and my current 6950 would enter "video playback" clocks when two monitors were connected. Clocks are less than 3d, but voltage is same, so power consumption was significantlymore than idle clocks. I countered this with custom downclock profile in Ati tray tools, forcing 2d clocks. No sta...

Re: Suggestions for 120mm+ horizontal for accelero s1
I have 1 120mm at 700 rpm on Accelero S1 rev2 cooling my 6950. Mini p180 case is well ventilated. No problem in keeping it cool. Theres room for 2x120 or 1x140, but no need. Any budget fan that can be slowed down and doesn't rattle will do. Go for slipstream only if room is a problem (it blocks 3 sl...

Re: P67 and H67 ?? for gaming purpose with videocard
H67 has stupid limit of running memory not faster than DDR3-1333.
Most kits are capable of running on much higher frequency. While previous processor models couldn't utilize the available bandwidth, Sandy Bridge can. And gaming is where it does make a difference (albeit quite small, 1-5%)

slap me sideways, I'm becoming senile
Why adjust BCKL at all, when ALL Intel cpus have UNLOCKED multipliers below official spec.
You can simply change multiplier to get less MHz.
But I will reiterate again, lowering voltage gives more tangible results.

Re: Possible to underclock a i3 by BLCK@66MHz
Hi, I am planning to build a silent (with low RPM fan) and cool HTPC. My question is that, is it possible to run the i3-530 with BCLK adjusted to 66MHz ? i.e. 22x66MHz = 1.45GHz From various review, the i3-530 idle at 16Watts, and Full load at ~60Watts. With BLCK@66MHz, I hope that it can be idle a...

go for Sandybridge cpu and mb
more performance, better power consumption and overclockability
(that is when they start shipping motherboards without the bug)
Radeon 6870, 6950 or gtx 560 offer better performance and less power consumption than gtx 470

Btw Sandy Bridge processors break these rules in many aspects. Please explain further. First, its cache system and memory controller are very efficient. So size of L3 cache (LLC) does not play a major role anymore. And effect of memory speed and timings is diminished. Then Hyperthreading kicks in a...

Yeah, its been at least a week since Intel got an idea about scale of problem
Their stock market actions point to that.
I'm comforting myself with idea that even if the controller fails, CRC error checking should not let files get damaged on hdd.
Hooking it up on 6gbps ports anyway

Got me a 2TB Samsung F4 as well, relieved some of my HDD space problems.
The only time I notice it is when it spins up. Vibrates a little, but not enough to rattle the case as some previous HDDs I had.

how about some S and T series reviews? I saw a review somewhere and was quite disappointed. Energy efficiency gain is close to nothing at idle; on load energy drop is much smaller than performance drop You'll be better off undervolting a regular processor. Edit: its not that bad, but you still lose...
