Re: Speedfan sets max speed even when FAR from 'Warning Temp
I have my temperatures set a Desired: 50C and Warning: 70C and RPM limits at 40% and 100%. So if the core temperature is 60C, I want the fans to be at 70% PWM. Then your second speed value should be 70%, not 100%. (100% speed happens at the "warning" temperature anyway, regardless of other settings...

I prefer to use Speedfan. I have the speeds automated right now (based on temperature), but it's good to have the option for manual control when needed.

A comment/suggestion regarding fan speeds in reviews
In short: I would like to see lower fan speeds when you're testing (CPU) coolers. 500rpm or even lower, to see how the heatsinks perform with that kind of airflow. Here's the thing... I have a Mugen 2 with two fans in push-pull and a P183 case with two fans (middle and back). All four are 12cm Scyth...

Re: Powercolor passive 7850 announced
Another review: http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/55413-powercolor-scs3-hd7850/ As expected, it runs quite hot at load. But every case has its own airflow, so I guess it depends. Quite frankly, if silence is your primary goal you can get TwinFrozr and DirectCU versions of the same card, so I do...

Re: Quiet/silent Radeon 7850 or GTX 660, SpeedFan control
No, I didn't try stopping the fan, because I couldn't do it with software. And unplugging it didn't seem easy enough with the cooler on. My guess is the temperature wouldn't be very high. With the stock fan on minimum speed it's about 10-15 degrees over ambient. I have a case fan near it, though. Wi...

Re: Updated Antec models for quiet music/moderate gaming set
I'm also considering the p183 v3 , and simply ignoring the top blower. Do owners of the v3 cover the top vent, if so, how? Will it be enough to cover it in foil, or have you cut out material to cover it up? If so, did it make any difference, - and is it even needed, in your opinion? Also, I imagine...

Re: Quiet/silent Radeon 7850 or GTX 660, SpeedFan control
Just an update. I eventually bought a PowerColor 7850 PCS+ , so here's a quick recap. I'm still using the stock cooler+fan. I can set the lowest speed to around 992 rpm, which is achieved at around 25-30% in Speedfan. Setting it to anything lower than 25% doesn't reduce the speed and the fan never s...

Re: Powercolor passive 7850 announced
You're right, they've probably done their math and figure they won't get a lot of RMAs in the two years of warranty. But I have fanless video cards with lower TDPs and they can get quite hot. A 4670 Ultimate without much airflow next to it can easily go to high 80s. A 7850 would probably go higher. ...

Re: Powercolor passive 7850 announced
Interesting. I wonder what the dimensions are, it looks kinda big. EDIT: on second examination, it seems to have the same length as the regular 7850 cards. I'm not sure I'd use a 7850 completely fanless. It would need a very good case airflow, preferably from the side panel intake, going around the ...

Re: Hopefully an interesting fan question + plea for advice
As a consequence we loose the PWM ability of the fans that we had before - thus we no longer can regulate the fans with speedfans and/or the fans no longer can be regulated by motherboard. That's not necessarily true. I'm able to control non-PWM 3 pin fans with Speedfan on two motherboards I tried....

Re: Reasonably sized VGA coolers (fanless or with 120mm fan)
@kuzzia: Yep, that's one of the options I'm considering. But if the middle case fan was enough, even better. @edh: Good idea. Based on the pictures in this thread (in a P182, but still) it looks like removing the plastic and cutting off some aluminium could make the S1 Plus fit. It might depend on t...

Reasonably sized VGA coolers (fanless or with 120mm fan)
I have an Antec P183, with the middle fan mounted on the drive cage, like in this picture: http://www.weytens.net/_www/2011-04-30_001.jpg I find this middle fan setup very convenient and efficient for cooling the video card, so I'd like to keep it. The problem is that some longer VGA coolers might n...

Re: Quiet/silent Radeon 7850 or GTX 660, SpeedFan control
Just something I noticed when I was looking at the 7850 reviews: most models have a 4-pin fan connector, but the two HIS models I saw have a simpler, 2-pin one (black and red wire): http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/4847/his_radeon_hd_7850_2gb_video_card_overclocked_review/index2.html http://www.guru...

Re: Quiet/silent Radeon 7850 or GTX 660, SpeedFan control
I have a couple of SlipStreams (a PWM version and a 3 pin 1200rpm), so I would use those. The main difference is the 3 pin has a minimum speed of around 350rpm, lower than that it just stops, whereas the PWM version can spin even slower (using a Gigabyte P55 mobo). If/when I get a new GPU I'll try c...

Re: Quiet/silent Radeon 7850 or GTX 660, SpeedFan control
That's great, then. I was aware that Speedfan added temp monitoring for Radeons about a year ago, but I wanted to make sure there's also fan control. (I have 2 Radeons at home actually, but they're both fanless.) Perhaps Speedfan can also make the fan spin below 1000rpm and/or stop it completely? It...

Quiet/silent Radeon 7850 or GTX 660, SpeedFan control
I'm considering getting a Radeon 7850 and maybe a GTX 660 as well, but this is already at the upper limit. Maybe if Nvidia has better drivers or something... Ideally I'd get a fanless model, but no such thing (at least for now). I still have some hope, seeing how there was a fanless 6850. So, if I'd...

Thanks for the review, but
I run SlipStreams at 400 RPM, when not gaming or overclocking. IMO, 500 RPM is not too slow for quiet systems. The 500 RPM model was deemed too slow for any real cooling usefulness

I am considering purchase of a silent PSU and the Seasonic SS-400FL is at the top of the list. I have a Fractal Define R2 case that has a bottom mounted PSU. Speedfan now supports ATI (AMD) video cards
http://www.almico.com/sfbetaprogram.php
Currently still in beta. I tried it briefly. I have a fanless 4670, so I could only set the case fans accordingly, dependent on the GPU temp. It worked well. (There was a GPU fan speed entry as well.)

Re: X-400 buzz noise
I tried with a Belkin 6 socket surge protector, which "Filters EMI/RFI noise up to 58 dB reduction". No difference as far as I can tell. But as I've said before, it's not a loud noise and I think it's tolerable (at least until I make everything else silent). BTW, there are 3 levels of noise, dependi...

Re: P183 - dampening the front door
The noise is mostly from the HDDs, but there's not a lot of it.
I wasn't thinking of blocking that entrance, merely to enhance the way the door already functions [in reducing the noise], if possible.

P183 - dampening the front door
I noticed that the most noise comes from the bottom front, where the HDDs and an intake fan are located. The noise gets reduced noticeably with the front door closed. But could I reduce it further if I added something to the door? If yes, what would you recommend? I tried with some light foam, but, ...

Re: X-400 buzz noise
I'm a new owner of an X-400. It does indeed make a bit of noise. I have it outside of the case, for now, so I was able to listen to it closely with my ear next to it. After an initial examination, I'd say there are at least two types of sounds from at least these two areas: http://i54.tinypic.com/2e...

The point is that you have more control over noise and if you set up the airflow properly you can cool many components with a single fan (HDDs+PSU in the P18x cases).step2006 wrote:What is the point to use a fanless PSU if we have to put a fan to vent it ?

I don't see any imediate competition for HDD as storage medium. A duopoly maybe good for their profits, but I'm doubtfull that it will be good for costumers... Yeah. Suspending HDDs with non-elastic cord
I'm considering using non-elastic cord instead of the usual elastic for suspension. It has one main advantage of being more durable and doesn't become loose over time. I was thinking of a cord of the type that is used for shoe laces. (Nylon type cord is also an option, but I'm afraid it would make s...

Re: Is 183 dual-chamber design good for fanless PSU?
Do you suggest to put this fan for intake or exhaust? If the fan was placed in the rear, I'd say exhaust. But since it's in the front, intake seems more appropriate. Also, since the chamber is not airtight, you could run the risk of air being sucked from the top chamber, therefore bypassing the PSU...
