Re: Storage (In The Next 5 Years)

And the expectation some 5+ years ago was that by now SSDs would be as cheap as HDDs for the same storage capacity.
We're far from it! The pricing per TB is roughly 5:1 SSD to HDD at the budget end.

Re: Silent PC Part Recommendations (Mid-2018)

Given the current situation with availability and pricing I'd change your lists to some degree. Given that most aren't very noise sensitive and most computer parts are "low noise" by general standards that part is also toned down. All: * RAM should be at least 2666. 3000-3200 is usually the same pri...

A dust filter is decisively more restrictive than the typical heatsink, so that's where you want a strong fan.
Other than that most mounts in cases aren't very restrictive.

To be clear, they still manufacture old gen CPUs when the new gen is launched? Not just sell off the old inventory? I wouldn't be as concrete as Steve. There will be "old" CPUs available in stores for a while (weeks/months) after a successor is released. Do not count on getting a brand new older ge...

The ESD bag isn't bad:
* It's equal potential all over.
* It's not conductive at the voltages involved with a computer (impedances more than tens of megaohms). Any leakage currents will be up to micro amps.

Driver cooling shouldn't be an issue unless you have some HDD that has to work hard for a long time.

That's 140 mm vs 120 mm. My assumption: The fan blades look the same, and to get the same area cover with larger diameter two more blades are required. The Dark Rock (PRO) leaves a bit to be desired for use with AMD CPUs. Can only be mounted in one direction. For the PRO version that's with vertical...

Re: The idiocy of Intel's T desktop processors

Clueless reviewer strikes again... Typically, CPUs never consume as much power as their TDP. As a blanket statement that's plain wrong nowadays, if one discuss power consuption at 100% load. (Admittedly, most CPUs are not demanded to run at 100% load most of the time.) The TDP is pretty much define...

Re: 5 volt 4-pin molex doesn't completely work

Now I think I understand:
You're essentially feeding 5V on the 12V input and 12V on the 5V input on the fans.
Then the problem can be assumed to stem from having 12V on the 5V line, causing problems with some regulator.

180W on the 12V line might be a bit tough.
I'd rather suggest you buy a new PSU. Good ones in the 400-500W range can be had at <$50.

Local storage is used! Like the 11 TB of pictures a hobby photographer I know makes use of. Those interested in filming will use up way more than that. Even a 500 GB SSD is currently prohibitively expensive for me, even though I'd love to have one for my game library (which is currently ~350 GB when...

There's just about always something "new and better" just a few months away.
That said I think it could be worthwhile to wait at least for the near releases of new Intel chipsets and new AMD products.
After that any releases are more uncertain in time and impact.
