Cliff Notes

* right panel vent for HDDs.

* HDD mounted on rails now vertically

* sound dampening material works better than Sonata 3

Akasa AK-967 (Nero)

Has anyone had any experience with this cooler? I've read the SPCR on the 965 about a year ago. Will SPCR be doing another review on the 967? I'm just curious because according to frostytech it runs at 31.4dB - 39.3dB http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=2354&page=3 which they list am...

Best combination of Noctua NF-P12 & NF-S12 fans?

I'm curious as to what the best combination of the NF-P12 and NF-S12 fans would be in a full tower case. Would it be better to use all NF-P12s on the HSF & case?; Or to use the NF-P12 on the HSF and a couple NF-S12s on the case? Supposedly the notched edges on the P12 are to spread the sound band ou...

Recommended Heatsinks /Olle ty, I've seen that. but it was last updated in June '08. :) I'm curious about how the more recent & upcoming HSFs compare. Specifically, if any of the designs are better w/ fans that are deemed quiet. Wider spaced fins allows less constricted airflow, but closer fins all...

What's the best performing heatsink w/ low-medium CFM fans?

I'm in the final stages of building my new system and I thought I was decided on the Noctua NH-U12P. But from what I've read, although it's good at cooling it's not the best. I keep reading the TRUE is the best. But how much better? And does the closer fin design mean it's actually worse for low noi...

New Enermax Eco 80+ series w/ new quiet fan

http://www.anandtech.com/weblog/showpost.aspx?i=542 I was in Taiwan yesterday for a brief stopover, and with Enermax being close to the airport I took the opportunity to have a visit their HQ in Taoyuan. The best place to find new products is the R&D department. I actually found the engineers testi...

Are the new 9800 GTX+ cards as quiet as the old ones?

I've seen that the card has shrunken since it was introduced last Summer. I can only assume that with this shrinkage came a reduction in the heatsink. I've seen reviews of the original card claiming it's very quiet for a performance card; & I'm wondering if the same still applies to these new redesi...

Nowadays Silencer was manufactured by Seasonic and quiet but not silent considering ADDA 80mm fan characteristics. I've had experience with Silencer 750, which was quiet at idle, that performed brilliantly for E8200+P35+4870 rig. As for full load, I doubt thay you system could draw 700W DC at load?...

PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W question

Hi, I have been looking at this PSU for a while as it's been floating around $70 after rebate. All the reviews I read on it give it good scores; however they say it is not really silent & can make quite a bit of noise under load. What I'm wondering is, since it uses an 80mm fan; is it user replaceab...

Noctua NH-U12P or Scythe Mugen 2?

Hi I'm currently building a Q9650 system (as soon as the Jan 18 price drop hits) and am having trouble choosing between these two heatsinks. I've read some things about the Noctua fans (NF-P12) being noisy, which i found weird since i thought their notched design was supposed to reduce noise. Can an...

Just a heads up. Saw this review, looks like the Thermalright is pretty good but the Silenx isn't. Both might have a problem keeping the voltage converter temps low enough though.

La Cie's (Noctua) new quiet fans, do notches = slience?

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/12/12/lacie_quiet_fans/ External storage supplier La Cie has found a way to quieten its external drives by adding staggered notches to the trailing edges of the fan blades. How does that work? This is my understanding of the airflow and acoustics involved. A typica...

The thing is, nowadays high wattage sells. It's simply a fact. Too many times I see "enthusiasts" with 850W+ PSU powering rigs that at worse would require a 400W PSU! I don't know whether it's future-proofing, for the ease of mind or simply e-pen but it's happening. How much more power would high w...

A layer of dust usually settles at the bottom of my case where i live, which i clean out every month.

Would this be problematic for a PSU sitting at the bottom of the case and pulling in air from the top of the PSU? Would compressed air clean it ok, or would the charge cause more stubborn cling?

is there any downside to mounting a PSU upside-down?

I'm thinking of getting a case w/ the PSU mount located on the bottom of the case, but the SeaSonic PSU i'm looking at has 12cm fan located on the (normally) bottom of the unit. Mounting it right-side up would have the fan facing the bottom of the case, not much room for air-flow. Is there any reaso...

I wouldn't mind spending some time & effort customizing the case for silence if it could be done. I'm just not sure if doing so would still maintain the cost benefit. One other thing I forgot to mention & am not sure if I should be worried about in a case like the P182 is that in the compartmentaliz...

you can make any case quiet if you know how. well yea, i could put in low noise fans & even line it w/ noise dampening material. but would that be better than a case that's designed primarily for low-noise like the P182? Antec Nine Hundred loud? or quiet?

I noticed NewEgg has the Antec 900 (or Nine Hundred however it's labeled) on sale for $60 w/ free shipping. I'm tempted but I want to build a quiet computer. I sit next to my PC (a foot or two away) about 8 hours a day and white noise bothers me. Would it be quiet if all the fans ran on low? How abo...
