I agree with you BUT make sure the enclosure you buy is suitable to passively cool whichever drive you choose. Most low cost encs have fans louder than jet planes!

I should know I've got some!

Thanks LH. I have two probs with that though.
The first is that it will only take 500gb drives and secondly its $170 which with shipping to the uK woudl take it well outside what I can currently spend.
As I said, I'm happy to make an enclosure its just the electronics really I feel i need.

Help with DIY external storage needed

I have 4 drives currently fitted to my antec case. When typing the sound of the keyboard is louder even though its just 300mm away so I'me very pleased! My problem is that I've an esata raid box which when I turn it one to do my backups sounds like a bloomin jet taking off. Its only a 40mm fan so is...

I tried std shoe laces and found they were simply rubbish!
I ended up using 3mm shock cord. Tie a double knot one end thread it all inso that there is NO slack. Then pull it all in a further 50mm and tie off your knot. There is then lots of flexibility but minimal sag.
Have fun withe thsilence!

Hi FWIW, I'd def go for more than 1 hard drive if, that is, you value your images and videos. Regardless of how long a guarantee, is your hard drive WILL fail. As a min I'd go for 3. One as a boot, and two (min of 500GB) as a RAID 1 (mirrored). The reason I say this is because I recently lost over 5...

If it were mine I'd try silicone caulking. You get it in black and it dries shiny so would work well. HOWEVER! It takes real practice to get it right and is a complete pig to remove if it goes wrong. I do this almost every day as I install bathrooms but a real tip is when you do it do it ONCE and th...

I appreciate your thoughts and to a large extent agree; its certainly not going to be easy. Whilst the Nexus case looks fab, I want a challenge  I've already got a PSU that's just fine and remember this thing has to sit ON my desk. This is why I was going for an mATX. At present 2 of my drives...

Asus TM-B1 case opinions - OR ALTERNATIVES!

My existing case cannot cope with 6 HDDs without totally overheating. So, Ive been looking around and found the Asus TM-B11 (it's available at Play.c*m) I'm sorry I can't put in a proper link as I'm not yet allowed. Has anyone any experience of it? Alternatively, any suggestions for as small a footp...
