NSK3480 Fan Grille Mods

Hello All. After much laziness and project dodging, I've finally done my fan grille mods for my quiet PC. For comparison, the original NSK3480 thread is here:- http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=56875&highlight= Both the case side panel (CPU fan) and enclosure bottom (VGA fan) were...

My apologies, I stand corrected. The height of the Zipang V2 is 106mm not 149mm, my bad.

It seems this would be better choice than previously thought! :)

what about the height from the base of the mobo mounting plate? That is typically 8-10mm. Sounds like it too close to me and besides, if it is very close where would the heat go? They need romm above, to 'breath' (heat to dissapate) Not sure I understand what you mean by "mobo mounting plate". Are ...

I wouldnt risk it! try a Scythe Shuriken or Zipang V2 instead! :) Interesting cooler (Zipang V2). Six heatpipes and a 140mm fan. At 149mm high it would be a guaranteed fit, but at just 3mm shorter than the Tuniq I'm concerned about the lack of clearance from the ceiling to the down-draught fan. Wou...

Ok, an unlikely scenario for most. I have calculated the likely figures:- Integrated Stackup Height (mm) From Top of Board to Top of IHS (Integrated Heat Spreader) 8.116 mm ** motherboard Thickness: 2.0 mm (?) Combined Thickness: 10.116 mm Rounded Up: 10.200 mm ** Figure from Intel LGA1156 Socket Do...

Dimensional Help (Case Height)

Hello All. I'm currently helping a work colleague choose components for his high performance multi-role computer. It has been decided that the Silverstone CW01 media server case is an ideal match for his requirements. It's height is given as 170mm. My question is would a CPU cooler (Tuniq 120 Tower ...

quad core would only be beneficial if the software you are using is multi-threaded, which i doubt it is(?). the latest 10.1 flash player now has better support for gpu playback, especially on nvidia systems; also check to see if any new nvidia drivers have been released for your card. fortunately y...

Nice ideas. Was the setup running hot with only a single intake fan? Btw. are these Wharfedale Diamonds 10.1s? For the VGA card, temps would run too high without a fan when using openGL applications (3D). The CPU wasn't so bad. It would only get particularly hot if encoding video for instance. It i...

NEAR SILENCE: THE PRIMARY CONSIDERATION

At this point I should just clarify something. Cool running temps of system components isn't my primary objective. The decision to use uncomplicated manual fan control was borne out of a desire for acoustic consistency, i.e. under varying system loads. The VGA card, in summer, typically ran at about...

Hi, Did you try it with air moving into the bottom fan and out the side fan? I think that the large fan on the small grill must be making some additional noise; than the fan in free air, or with a grill opening that is the same size as the fan. In the beginning I experimented with both the position...

Brilliant. Thanks again (this is getting to be a habit  ).

If it was me, Linux would be my first choice (as on my own rig). However, for sheer power of software marketing, Windows 7 will almost certainly be used on his machine.

Yeah that DVD drive mod is brilliant, great way to fit longer PSUs in that case. And definitely either enlarge that side panel intake, or use a smaller fan that fits the perforations. First of all, it's probably hard on the fan's motor with so much of it blowing straight into metal like that. Also ...

I find the power connector mod on the optical drive to be most interesting as it costs almost nothing and opens up the possibility of using some different PSU's in the cramped NSK3480 upper chamber. I am not intimately familiar with Ubuntu, but you might investigate if your system is using the gpu ...

Thanks for your reply whiic. Regarding AV/streaming specific as opposed to desktop versions, this is something I was not aware of, thanks I will avoid them. A more correct consideration then would be the WD20EARS instead. My colleague has a very large vinyl and CD collection. I need to determine his...

My NSK3480 Pride And Joy

Hello all. I thought I'd share my first PC build result, here in the gallery. The NSK3480 as many will know, is a petite mATX tower. I felt this would place well with the accompanying AV equipment. Here it is fully deployed:- http://i757.photobucket.com/albums/xx216/6str1ng/First%20PC%20Build/00001....

Acoustics: Terrabyte HDDs - 2.5" vs 3.5"

Hello All. I was wondering about noise comparisons between a 2.5" laptop drive (i.e. WD10TEVT) and a 3.5" standard size drive (i.e. WD10EVDS). Both are 1TB drives, but (naturally) the laptop drive costs more than a 3.5" 2TB drive (WD20EVDS) also. If 2TB of space *might* actually be required, ...
