I already have a 5K500, and no problems with it... But now they are old, hard to obtain, and/or very expensive.
Surely people must have bought more recent drives? Any others to avoid? Or is the problem that they are all to avoid and there isn't any good recent ones?

Re: Desperate quest for a silent 2.5" HDD
I too am looking for a quiet recent 2.5" drive. Preferably with good capacity, performance, and price. Is there such a thing? I doubt it. :) I'm just looking for a quiet 2.5 drive that doesn't suck. Exactly what I want too 8) An SSD would have the silence and good performance, but bad price and cap...

I don't know about the stock cooler, but this card isn't quiet when idle. See my post here.lodestar wrote:This review http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS ... II/22.html suggests that under normal loading it is significantly quieter than the stock cooler.

Re: Gaming system around £1k
Ok, I got it and built it.. So here's my comments about the components: ASUS GTX 570 DirectCU II This thing is not quiet :( I don't know how anyone could say it was quiet, I'd hate to hear whatever it was they were comparing it to. The cooler is great, keeps it very cool. But the fans are terrible. ...

Re: Fans for a storage chassis - 80mm & 120mm needed
It doesn't look like there's any vents at all into where the drives are. Are the fans meant to cool the drives at all? Or is the air meant to go through those little cutouts in the backplanes and around the PCBs? Seems like if they had designed it better for airflow, it wouldn't need half as many fa...

Re: feedback on mid-range micro-atx build
I noticed that ASUS recently released a Direct CU II version of the GTX 560... Unfortunately, the noise levels under load are abysmal when compared to the EAH6850 I wonder if this applies to the GTX 570 version too (Which I was thinking of getting ). But, is it really bad, or just really bad compar...

Re: Gaming system around £1k
For a gaming system I would recommend the Antec 902 case I don't really see any great advantage to that case.. More fans, but they aren't especially quiet. It has fan controllers, but I'd rather vary them through the motherboard, if at all.. Also it lacks the PSU vent on the bottom. You could also ...

Re: Gaming system around £1k
How about the ASUS ENGTX570 DirectCU II instead? I can get this for basically the same price.
The only review I can find doesn't say much about noise, but in this thread and in the review quotes on the ASUS site there are favourable comments about the noise levels.

Re: Gaming system around £1k
I just looked at a couple of reviews, and it seems you're right. I presume this is because both CPUs are more than capable of running games, and it's the graphics card which is the limiting factor? Wouldn't the 2600K be more "future proof" though? I guess I could go with the 2500K then. I'd lose a l...

Re: Gaming system around £1k
I don' know much about the fans either (or the PSUs), but finding any well-reviewed ones at sensible prices here (UK) seems very hard. The video card gets good reviews (http://www.guru3d.com/article/palit-geforce-gtx-570-sonic-platinum-review/1). I'm guessing the first PSU is "better" (80+ gold), bu...

Gaming system around £1k
A bit similar to this topic http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=62262 . First system I've built from scratch for very many years, and I've never been very good at making decisions. It's taken me a long time to come up with this list. I had been waiting for Z68, but it seems I w...

Is the difference between this "silent edition" and other versions of the Venomous X just in the supplied fans, with the cooler itself being the same?

A new version of the Fenrir, called Fenrir EVO, was released last year, using a different fan.

Ah, I was talking about the iomega drive, but it may be the same with yours also. The iomega enclosure itself doesn't get hot I don't think, but no idea about the drive inside. I'm not sure if this enclosure has a fan, but I'm thinking it doesn't. Another poor thing about that enclosure that I didn'...

Re: Quiet quality external HDD case
I have one of these . It may be big, comparatively expensive, and the fan does make some audible noise, but it does keep the drive much cooler than normal enclosures. It doesn't look or feel too cheap either. The fan could maybe be modified to run slower or maybe even temperature-controlled if it's ...

Re: enclosures?
I know someone who has an iomega "mac mini-style" drive, and that is also very noisy. For an enclosure that size (and price), they could have put some good anti-vibration mountings inside, as it must be mostly empty. But no, from the sound of it there's none at all and the drive is "hard" mounted to...

Re: 1TB hdd. Samsung F2 Eco or WD WD10EARS Green?
I'm still in the same position. I think I can still obtain these drives, including the old (F2/EADS) ones, so would it be better for me to go for one of these, or a newer F4 or something? Any to specifically avoid? Reliability is the top priority, followed by noise and then performance.

Re: Silence internal HD that is used externally
I use two or three layers of "bubble wrap" (rather than foam) under my external drives, and this works well to stop the vibration (and seek noise) being transferred from the drive to whatever it's standing on. But I don't think anything the drive or enclosure is stood on would do anything about the ...

Re: 1TB hdd. Samsung F2 Eco or WD WD10EARS Green?
I have a similar quandary. 1 or 1.5TB, WD or Samsung... I could get WD10EADS, HD105SI(F3), HD103SI(F2), HD154UI/Y(F2), WD15EARS, WD10EAVS. Noise (idle) and reliability are more important to me than performance; this drive will be used for storage/games in an external enclosure. From what I've read, ...

Re: Corsair Gold AX850 PSU
So the fan doesn't spin at lower loads/temperatures because the voltage going into it isn't high enough to start it spinning... Isn't the power going into the fan at this point just being wasted? Wouldn't it be more sensible to have the fan power completely switch off when it isn't needed?

viewtopic.php?p=509498#509498 suggests the WD15EARS is more noisy than the WD15EADS, perhaps this is the same for all EARS vs EADS? (WD10EADS is rather more expensive than WD10EARS). article1061-page3.html review of a 2TB EcoGreen F3 drive shows it as more noisy than the 500GB EcoGreen F2. Should th...
