First a question: What thermal paste do you use between heatpipes and heatsink? It looked like your temps was ok. Was they even near critical values when you ran at 2.2GHz? You could have crashed for other reasons. This could be tested by increasing the vcore slightly. Either you get a crash a lot ...

You know, that's what I'd be worried about. Although I don't know how much affect it would have. Vibration would be a concern. A pro for Lan parties is you can provide the tunes. Another thought I've had, but may not work for a system with just one driver, is that with enough drivers (or displacemen...

That had to do with the machine I suppose. Defn of "lap": "any device for bedding mechanical components together using a fine abrasive to polish the mating surfaces" It shouldn't be a problem if you have a Al/Cu part because they will grind down evenly since you are laying it on a flat glass surface...

Here is an article about it. http://www.overclockers.com/tips1015/ Basically you should lay the glass down, as the flat surface, lay the paper on the glass and then slide the part back and forth over the paper. The paper should be something like 200, 300, 400, 600, etc... depending on how much rough...

fmah -- Hey, your project belongs in SPCR!! 8) I'll email you about doing a project article. Too bad you didn't post this earlier. I just came back from LA last night and would have enjoyed seeing this first hand. I have a bunch of parts including some 12~15 lb HS that have been sitting around that...

Right now I've had 100% load for maybe 15 minutes. About 20 C ambient and overclocked from 1700+ (1.47GHz) to 2200+ (1.8GHz). So far temperatures are not really any hotter, which is very interesting. Hottest temp so far is 46 C. Update: I booted in at 2.02GHz and loaded the CPU for around 5 minutes ...

Thats one huuuuge heatsink on the back. It looks awsome. Whats the weight of the heatsink? What will the long screws on the CPU for? Is it to be able to put a P4 heatsink there for additional cooling if needed? The heatsink is about 6 lbs. I think I might consider putting fins on the copper block m...

I would expect you to only have problems if you turn the unit off and leave it to cool down. If it's on the whole time then it should stay warm enough to not worry about condensation. Condensation occurs when the temperature of the item is at the dew point or lower. The dew point is when the air can...

I started it up tonight. Just trying it in idle mode. I didn't really even notice that computer came on, aside from the dual fan Antec (which I have laying around as it's handy). Right now the idle CPU temp (from BIOS) is 37C while the air temp is 22C. Athlon 1700+ on Shuttle nforce2 motherboard. I ...

Heatpipe cooling test
I'm going to be doing the maching of the last parts I need for my passive CPU cooler test platform...... Can we see some piccies when it's done? Here are two pics, I have not fired it up yet. I still want to polish down the blocks and heatsink a bit. The pipes ended up being a little shorter than I...

I found this bit interesting. Anandtech ran benchmarks in Linux 64 bit. They recomplied the Lame MP3 encoder making encoding times go from 3.07 to 2 minutes. http://anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1884&p=17 Pads are easier to install for mass production, but are normally not going to perform as wel...

I got them from AVC, they are 6mm pipes, which seems to be the largest common size available. Today I primer painted the stand portion of the setup so it won't rust. I need to clean up and tap the copper blocks. I'm going slow on the project since the copper is expensive I don't want to mess them up...

I have gotton the copper block parts machined. That was a pain as it was the first time I machined copper. The parts are not perfect, but I hope they will work well enough. I have two sample heatpipes for my test. I want to build a passive cooling kit or case or something to that effect. I will be a...

Yeah, you have to connect to the chassis, or the weight will be too much.

I have looked at the various specs for off shelf heatsinks, and the lowest I've seen for a mountable heatsink is 0.80deg C/W for a 3" long piece. The other dimensions are about 7" by 2.8" and the fin spacing looked similar to that of a P4 or Athlon OEM style heatsink. Based on Wakefield's thermal ha...
