No, they are gone from AOpen's site! A few weeks ago if you did a "comparison" on Dual DDR400 as a feature all the 875P, 865P, 865PE and 865GE boards came up, now only the Canterwoods. :( The Springdales look very similar to the 845PE/845GE line in terms of features (6PCI slots, Max models h...

Nice to see more companies making boards that can control the fans, regulate cooling. I have been waiting for a review of the AOpen AX4C Max with the SilentTec feature, see what writers think of it. Thinking that a Springdale board would save some money and be about as fast as a Canterwood. With AOp...

Hear Sink Like This?
I have been watching Ebay and have seen a few heatsinks like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3411723372&category=14290 Looks like leaves of grass sticking out from the CPU. I wonder if something like this would work well with the PSU Inlet just above it to keep the air movin...

Great! The G550 upgrade comes through and still no fan. Lets see what the reviews (if any, since it's not a "gamer") say Vs the 550 quality. Lots of people say that the G550 is the way to do 2D. I have never owned one but at the price I figured that the 550 would have been a good starting place. Jus...

Thanks Mike, I was close to building a new Digital Darkroom with the AOpen AX4GE, Thermalright 900 on a 2.53 (good price point) in a Sonata case. Thought of a Panaflo 80 M BX to mod the Antec 380 PSU, the 92mm L BX for the HS and moving the stock 120mm fan to pull through the HDDs with a quieter 120...

Mike, It looks like the AOpen SilentTec is most useful in a "normal" situation where the load on the system varies over time. With the constant 100% load of Folding@Home you could probably tune the various fans with any of several standard pieces of hardware. You are using an 80mm L on the Thermalri...

Bad news  Just removed the HSF from the P II and the Heat Sink comes with it! :o The HS and fan mount/shroud are all one piece. It's very light, feels like PLASTIC with a small 3 x 3cm piece of Aluminum in the center to contact the CPU, no signs of any thermal compound. One good thought...

That 350 PII on Ebay looked good. I will have to open my case again and measure from the CPU chip itself to the DIMM. Perhaps I should pull the fan off and see what I have under the plastic cover. Gee, a better HS and 10% more power for $12.50! I will have to start looking at Ebay again. Does anyone...

When I have seen the Zahlman fan mounts they are holding the fan parallel to the motherboard and the fan blows horizontally in a tower case, toward the motherboard. This heatsink has no horizontal channels, the groves/fins all run vertically and I think I need to get the air moving between the fins ...

Quiet my P II HSF?
The Slot1 HSF on my e-mail machine is anoying me. It's a 300 MHz Pentium II with a small "wizzer" fan in a long black plastic shroud that extends the length of the heat sink. I think the CPU is a Deschutes (low power) because the memory is 100MHz which started with the Deschutes. It was not "state o...

Newegg has the AOpen AX4C Max Canterwood board this evening for $219 - 20 rebate = $199. The 3.0 GHz 800 MHz Pentium IV for $515. The Kingston HyperX PC3500 DDR434 memory used in the HotHardware review at $129/512 Meg delivered (need a Gig for my new digital darkroom). WOW $972 if you are doing a Mo...

Even if they just swap even for a new 40GB you will be ahead. I picked up a DM +8 40GB drive at a great price the other week at Office Depot, for my email system. With the FDB and then quieting the seeks and putting it in an old 5.25 -> 3.5 adaptor (cheap HS) on a piece of foam at the bottom of the ...

If you get it a bit quieter and the seek noise starts to bother you get Maxtor's Acoustic Management Utility AMSET:

That will help a bit more.

I think the Antec TPs vary the speed of the fans inside the PSU as the power output changes. They also vary the speed/voltage on the "fans only" connector at the same time. Would not be suprised if it came from the same source. How about using a Panaflo 80M (Medium speed/airflow) as the exhaust fan ...

A question for the "Intel watchers" out there. Intel has not made them "official" yet but they are on Mobo mfgrs. websites. Based on previous announcements (Granit Bay, 400 -> 533 FSB) how long do you think it will be untill one can call Newegg, etc. and order the new 800 FSB boards, PIVs & DDR400 m...

"the seeks are still loud" You DID go to maxtor.com and download AMSET, their Acoustic Management program: http://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/maxtor.cfg/php/enduser/olh_adp.php?p_faqid=1200 and then run it with the /quiet switch, didn't you. Have similar questions myself. I was wondering if swapping the stock 80mm fan for a Panaflow M1A (Medium, not the L1A) would be quieter than the original? Would a 3-wire fan with speed sensing be required? Similarly, in a two fan PSU (like the 550 watt True Control) would swapping just the rear fan ...
