Re: Build the Perfect Lab or Office Workstation

Figure 1. Typical airflow inside a CRAZY UPSIDE DOWN computer chassis. The blue arrow indicates cool air, and the red one warm air. Great article, but I think the usage of the Lian Li A05NB as the main example wasn't the best choice (as pointed out in the above quote). I did a double take, thinking...

Re: e-tailers who build custom SFF PC

What country are you in? Even e-tailers don't ship anywhere in the world, and with a pre-built computer the shorter the distance it has to be shipped the better.

Monitor whine - a fix for some

Something quick and simple to try if your monitor is making a whining noise - adjust the power cord, wiggle it a bit and see if the noise cuts out. I have a couple of monitors, including 2 LA2405wg's that are silent at any brightness but on occasion have started whining. I finally traced the problem...

Re: i5 build with modest silencing

Finally received the system. I really didn't get to run it much because I was fixing assembly errors like the fan being mounted to the bottom of the heatsink (blocking the PCIe slot). The fan controller is missing, I'm working with the store to determine if they have it or the manufacturer didn't in...

Re: Asrock ION 330 upgrade to sandy bridge

The motherboard looks like a custom job and it is pretty tight in there. In particular it seems to be designed around the fact that the Atom CPU can be cooled passively with a small heatsink and requires only a small number of supporting chips. The whole cooling setup seems to be based around a push...

Re: Sound of silence

I don't think there are many motherboards, Sandy Bridge or not, with 2 DVI ports. However the HDMI port is backwards compatible with DVI - buy an HDMI to DVI cable or an HDMI to DVI doggle (if you have a DVI cable the doggle is cheaper at about $6, but it hangs off the back just like a DVI to VGA do...

Re: Advice on a new phone?

I recently picked up a Nokia C3-00 for it's normal price of $90 (no contract). It's 2G, S40 OS but with a UI face lift to make it more like S60 with a very good customizable home screen (I never visit that Nokia grid except to access the settings menu). I've used a number of Nokia's other budget pho...

Re: Sound of silence

What do you mean by heavier operations? If you are doing charting then it's mostly done on CPU, not the graphics card. The two monitors you specified are both 1080p and have connectors for VGA, DVI and HDMI. Sandy Bridge will have no problem powering these monitors. I would suggest connecting by DVI...

Re: i5 build with modest silencing

Received the Hawk 5770 since it was ordered seperately from Newegg due to Canadian dealer exclusivity. Did not receive the fans I ordered (it appears they where shipped in a seperate box, from a seperate location). I was not happy in the least with how it was packed by Newegg - on receiving I immedi...

Re: Sound of silence

Did you design this or the guy in the store? If you don't play games why do you need the dedicated graphics card - in particular a $200 one (I just bought a new system with gaming as one portion, and it only needed a $140 card). Looking at the CPU it becomes even more imbalanced - you are not playin...

Re: Silent UPS

I would like to thank you all for posting information here :). - do all your APC units have the possibility to connect to your computer with USB or UTP or something, to tell it to shut off in case of power failure? Almost all of the APC models seem to have USB connectivity (it uses a cable provided...

Re: Silent UPS

I also have the APC Back-UPS 750 (BE750G) as a replacement for the discontinued Back-UPS ES 725 Broadband (BE725BB). When first plugged in after taking it out of the box, or when on battery power there is a buzz audible at 3 feet. Otherwise it is totally silent - I sleep with one near the foot of th...

Re: i5 build with modest silencing

What case you going with? R3 or Mini or TJ08? The Define Mini just became available in Canada through Fractal's Canadian partner NCIX. I've ordered a system to build with most of the components, it's going to take an extra 5 days on top of the usual wait since the case hasn't technically landed in ...

Re: i5 build with modest silencing

Thank you for all the input. For the CPU I won't get any advantage from hyperthreading unfortunately - some of my tasks have trouble using more then 2 cores to begin with. The 2500K still seems like the best bang in almost any scenario. The input on video cards was really helpful, in particular the ...
