Re: AAM/APM for Seagate Barracuda 3T (ST3000DM001) 3-platter
I would like to know what other people think of this firmware and if they believe it reduces the number of times per day the drive parks it's heads. My firmware is the CC4C, which is also the latest according to Seagate: "CC4C, CC4D and CC9D (released together and are functionally equivalent)" . Th...

Re: AAM/APM for Seagate Barracuda 3T (ST3000DM001) 3-platter
I can return this drive for a better drive IF they exist...? I thought / read this was the best drive to buy... Id like to know what the Original Poster and Peter are doing... I'm going to keep the drive, because overall I think it's probably the best drive for my purposes. The performance of the d...

Re: AAM/APM for Seagate Barracuda 3T (ST3000DM001) 3-platter
Hi Mike, initially I did think that the number of head parks would be bad for the life of the drive, but in my later post, after doing some more research, I've come to understand that this does not appear to be true. Regarding the head parking being also a feature to prevent damage to the disk, I se...

Re: AAM/APM for Seagate Barracuda 3T (ST3000DM001) 3-platter
The manufacturers will deny that it does but from all the RMAs that ppl are making on the green drives, I feel it does affect the life of the unit. I mean they specify that the unit can last 300,000 head parks but in a couple months, the head parks get into the millions. Surely, something is wrong ...

Re: AAM/APM for Seagate Barracuda 3T (ST3000DM001) 3-platter
That's annoying. It seems that most manufacturers are standardizing this head parking feature and it doesn't make sense why they would do that if it's detrimental to the drive (unless they seek to make drives that do not last long so that consumers can buy more). Speaking of the Western Digital Gree...

Re: Will blocking P183's top vent improve cooling performanc
Thanks for the link, kuzzia. I've finished my P183 V3 build and I have to say, it is a lot quieter than expected. In effort to keep the noise down, I replaced the rear fan with a Nexus 120mm, the top fan with a Noctua NF-S12B FLX, and also two more Nexus 120mm fans at the front where the two doors o...

Re: AAM/APM for Seagate Barracuda 3T (ST3000DM001) 3-platter
Despite having read this thread, I still bought the ST3000DM001 because it was simply the best on paper for what I was looking for, and Western Digital seems to also use idle head parking as well. I do hear this noise every now and then which I am guessing is the head parking. It isn't as loud as I ...

Re: Will blocking P183's top vent improve cooling performanc
Thanks for the post, kuzzia. Just want to get an idea of how significant of an improvement it would be to have a top case fan, and if the trade off of extra noise is worth the gain.

Re: Will blocking P183's top vent improve cooling performanc
Can anyone else add their experience to this? It seems like owners of the P183 are unanimously saying that the top fan is very noisy, and often to the degree that they will not use it. How does blocking that top fan hole affect the internal temperatures?

Re: Looking for a hard drive suitable for gaming
Just adding that the Seagate Barracuda 2TB ST2000DM001 actually uses three platters, as indicated in Seagates own documentation. Apparently only the 3TB model gets the best platters. Performance is still good for a mechanical drive. I haven't listened to one yet although I should have, mostly becau...

Re: Looking for a hard drive suitable for gaming
After some more reading, I think I will go with the Seagate Barracuda 2TB (ST2000DM001) which uses 1TB platters. Hopefully it should perform just as well as the 3TB variant, and using only two platters rather than three, hopefully it will be more quieter also. It's a shame that their warranty isn't ...

Re: Looking for a hard drive suitable for gaming
If you do play games that frequently load lots of new content from the storage drive (eg: MMO's that load instances/zone portals/etc) a faster drive or SSD is a nice convenience, but not neccessary addition. I use an SSD for OS/apps and HDD for media storage. Do these games, or are there games that...

Looking for a hard drive suitable for gaming
After reading up on the Western Digital Caviar Black drives, it would seem that these drives are indeed quite loud. The idle sound may be decently quiet, but when it is seeking, it sounds horrendous from listening to some audio recordings from SPCR. The Green however sounds very quiet, and I could n...
