I'm using Scorpio as my primary desktop system drive. Model: WD1200VE (120GB/IDE). I was able to disable the APM using hdparm: hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda I had to reboot the machine in order to see the new APM setting reported by DTerm. That said... I'm not at all convinced that disabling APM is a good ...

They were a total pain in the butt to install, especially in the beginning, they were so tights and the adhesive was way more than needed. IIRC, silver matte molding was a bit softer than the rest of the colours. I don't remember any difficulty installing it. So I think it was a bit different than ...

Yes, but... does it come with Canadian warranty?? 1. SP1213 is not listed on Samsung Canada web site. 2. According to Samsung Canada, 8MB models are not available in Canada. If it's grey import, chances are Samsung won't honour the warranty. I emailed Frontier and asked them to clarify the issue. I'...

Re: Where, exactly, does the sound come from?
I have a theory that the real source of fan noise is from small spinning tornadoes of air, known in scientific terms as a "vortex", that is like slicing a peeling off the surface of cheese, and the peeling curls up into a tight roll. From ARX FAQ: Airflow noise is mostly associated with wide band n...

I finally bought a multimeter and measured my Evercool. It starts reliably at 4.5V. Anything below that is a nogo. At 4.5V MBM reports 900-920 RPM. The only thing I can hear is the moving air. No mechanical noise whatsoever, even if I put my ear right next to it. Great fan!! bonus: it's cheaper than...

Re: Stock PSU mod alternatives push or pull the air?
So far my options are: 1. Remove the 92mm entirely, cover up the hole on the bottom, enlarge the holes opposite the fan, and either move the thermal doohickey or hard wire it for 5v. 2. Remove the 80mm entirely, make more holes at the back of the PSU, cover up all holes except the intake for the 92...

Beware, Elliot, LCD's can make a high frequency noise worse than your CRT. I have read numerous posts of people with LCD's that hear annoying high frequency noise. The LCD I have in mind is Samsung 173T . It does have built-in power supply which, according to the posts upthread, could be the source...

CRT monitor is currently the noisiest component in my PC. It emits high pitch buzz that annoys me to no end. The funny thing is, I owned this monitor for 5 years and always thought it was silent. This past weekend I installed Silent Mike's modded Seasonic PSU . BOOM... now I hear CRT buzz that annoy...
