Thank you for the responses. Indeed the default fan profile of the Asus GTX 1070 is a bit too agressive. Under a prolonged heavy load, the 3 fans spin up to 2,000 RPM to keep the GPU below 70°, and at that level the card sounds like a hair dryer at full blast. I have manually set a "silent" profile ...
