Congratulations! SPCR has been a daily visit for longer than I can remember. My thanks to Mike and all who have contributed, quite literally, to a quiet life.

Re: A general question
So the bottom line is that a 450w psu should be ok for the system I'll build. I just wonder if the power consumption of i5 2500, as stated in the intel's web site, could be more than 95w under heavy load or is this the maximum amount it would spend? what do you think guys? Chip manufacturers state ...

Re: A general question
What is your budget in this? If money is no object then the Seasonic X-400 or Kingwin STR-500 are both amazing. As you say money is no object, want to build a good system that should last at least 6-7 years. As for the 80% efficiency level, I think this relates to two different things. Ok I know th...

Re: A general question
Just a "me too" on going with a quality 450/500W PSU, and that those much lower in capacity tend not to be of the finest vintage. If it helps provide a level of comfort, this is what I have connected to a Corsair HX520 (ie 520W) PSU: X58 motherboard, i7 980X, 12GB RAM, 3 x hard drives, 1 x SSD, DVD,...

Re: how to learn about building a database-driven website?
Might I suggest separating your concerns over intellectual property from the skills needed to developer and support and database driven website, at least at first? You can develop your ideas using software on your own PC/Mac, and thus keep to yourself. You should likely speak to a suitably qualified...

Re: Mike's final sign-off
Just like to add my small voice to the sense of shock, but also my very best wishes and thanks to Mike and the whole SPCR community. I only have half a dozen websites pinned to the top of my browser for daily visits and SPCR has always been one of those. Whatever happens, the journey has been excell...

Fitted Nexus 120mm to a SI-120 by cutting out the offending plastic webs. Just used a junior hacksaw to make three cuts per web, scored along the bottom with a craft knife then snapped out the pieces using some pliers. Very easy job if you don't mind a little cosmetic ugliness, this is a robust fan....

Further European source: I've had a "Noise Control Stealth Chieftec Dragon" for quite a while and am very happy with it. Purchased from www.chillblast.com in the UK.

I assume we we're talking about a VIE EPIA motherboard/CPU. It will absolutely be able to cope with streaming your MP3s over a LAN. A 486 would probably suffice :-) It is easy to forget how dramatically powerful recent desktop CPUs have become, yet not long ago a P-III was considered pretty decent f...

Hi Tigr. I think we have different needs. I would love to have a front panel (= ease of access) unit which can tell me internal temps AND can provide programable fan control. Programable to me means setting a voltage curve (or at least straight line) between min and max temps. Also with programable ...

Steve, many thanks for the link. Does indeed look to be the same unit. More links on the Kingwin site. The following is good info: http://www.systemcooling.com/kingwin_thermalcenter-03.html Disappointing that the start of each temp range is 25C - that's more like an ambient temp than something you wo...

Q-Tech 544TC Temperature Control Bay LCD
Anyone got experience of this, or any pointers to reviews (no luck with google):
http://www.qtec.info/products/product.htm?artnr=13952
In particular, I'm curious about the temp response curve and whether it will work OK with 2 lead fans that I have eg L1A.
cheers, martin

Interesting - I have been pondering a similar arrangement to give me off-site backup of data I would not like to lose in case of catastrophe. Apologies if any of what follows is already obvious to you. 1. Provide a backup for a dedicated webserver I have, probably using rsync(?). rsync is good. If t...
