Re: Why does my SB system use 2x more Watts than in SPCR rev

In the initial post you mentioned that you had not yet installed the Intel chipset drivers. It's possible that optimal cpu power saving only occurs after you install the chipset drivers, so I would try that and see if anything changes. As previous posters noted, you're only looking to explain a few ...

Most 4GB DDR3 kits I found -many are G-Skill- are 1.65V for 1600Mhz. I read that 1.5V runs cooler but I only found 1333Mhz kits. I'm also trying to get kits with CAS <8. I don't know if an 1.65V kit could run at 1.5V without problems. G.Skill makes an ECO (ecological) series with good performance t...

Under 64-bit Win 7, most 32-bit applications will run fine. But if the app has a 16-bit installer, which was true for many older apps, that installer cannot run in x64. Win XP mode would then be your only option, or getting a newer application.

I bought 8GB of the G.Skill ECO 1.35v ram for a recent computer build. The memory defaults to running at 1.5v. The 1.35v setting is contained in the XMP extended memory profile, which both lowers the voltage and raises the memory speed. I did not see any noticeable change in system power consumption...

I have the Thermalright Ultra120 in an Antec Solo case with an Asus P5 motherboard. It fits, but just barely. Given the lower thermal output of today's processors, I think the Ultima 90 will be fine and it will be easier to install. My CPU fan usually idles at 450 rpm and the processor stays cool.

If you're in the USA, McMaster-Carr carries E.A.R. fan grommets: http://www.mcmaster.com/. They can be hard to find on the website. Search for vibration control grommets. Here is a manufacturer's website: http://www.earsc.com/grommets.asp. These people understand vibration control, and tailor the ma...

I have a Solo with the Themeralright 120 Ultra Extreme on an Asus P5K motherboard. The heat sink just BARELY fits. If I were doing it again I'd use something smaller. Current CPU's don't generate enough heat to require such massive cooling. The CPU fan speed is controlled by the motherboard and rare...

I don't think anyone mentioned that what makes the capillary action work is a wick inside the heat pipe. If I remember right, a heat pipe can be more efficient without the wick, but then it is dependent on gravity to return the fluid.

Dell's Precision series used to have higher cooling just in case you would load up the system with options, and therefore was very noisy. I haven't heard one in a few years, so maybe they've changed, but you might want to be careful about it. Dell publishes environmental data sheets, often including...

No, even with active PFC VA and watts are not equal. They use VA because it lets them quote the highest possible number. VA is the peak voltage times the peak amplitude of the current. Watts measure the true power, which is the product of the voltage and current. Since the voltage and current are si...

Passive magnetic bearings can only be made stable in 2 dimensions, so you still need a mechanical bearing for the 3rd dimension. In this case, it looks like there is a mechanical thrust bearing in the axial direction. So you don't eliminate mechanical noise, you just have the potential to change it.
