Ticking doesn't sound like coil whine to me, are you sure it's from the PSU? If so, it could be motor noise from a fan. It's just anecdotal evidence, but when I first got my SLK3700AMB, I already had an enermax 350W. I was going to sell the Antec PSU as new, to offset my cost, but in a side by side ...

I just passified my 8500le with a HS I ebayed. I was thinking of throwing a fan on it, but it seems not to need it at all. Sorry, no pics, but the HS I used was about 75*75*30mm tall. I had to cut it down a bit to clear the big caps. I would think a stock CPU HS of recent vintage should be fine pass...

I was wondering about that. It seems logical, but the rise of the 120mm PSU craze has made me wonder. I was already planning on ducting the PSU to an empty bay, as mentioned by MikeC and the other thread you pointed out. That's the long term solution. The short term is already done, I removed the 80...

Where to find thin plexiglass?

Something like 2mm polycarbonate sheet that can be formed with a heat gun? I'm looking for a duct material that is cheap and easy to work.

Bonus points if anyone knows where to get such a thing in Vancouver.

I don't have any links for you, but I can say that the easy answer is line the insides with some light metal mesh or foil.

Many people also choose to ignore RFI. Those acrylic cases are as transparent to RF as they are to visible light.

The 92mm is a "Top Motor" brand (Dynaeon Industrial OEM) DF1209SH. The 80mm is the same OEM, DF1208SH. Same model minus the size. So it seems evident that the 92 will move more air/db. The heatsink internals are none too impressive compared to a quality PSU. No pics, sorry. I think I am going to run...

Radeon 8500 cooling

I am passifying my 8500le. I ebayed a large heatsink to replace the stock whiny 40mm HSF. Thing is, there is a raised ridge along the centre of the new HS. The result is that it covers only about 95% of the GPU core. There is a strip along either edge of a little less than 1mm where there is no cont...

Stock PSU mod alternatives push or pull the air?

I've read the articles about replacing the fan, and moving the thermal doohickey in a stock Enermax PSU. I'm finally done exams, and ready to mod the noisy Antec SmartPower in the 3700AMB. I have more time than $, so not looking to do a fan swap yet. So far my options are: 1. Remove the 92mm entirel...

Thermal epoxy cheap alternatives?

Exams over, finally ready to pull the horrible whiny fan off my Radeon 8500le, and replace it with a big passive heatsink. The only thermal epoxy i can find locally runs is Arctic Silver at $13 a tube. I am unlikely to use the stuff again, and I doubt I really need all that performance anyhow. I've ...

Well designed rails etc don't seem that much less solid than screws to me. As far as 5.25" devices go, I would never install a HD up there in the hottest part of the case unless I had to, and optical drives are so loud spinning that I would never notice the vibration over top of the whooshing noise....

I was considering the exact same 2 HSF for my system. I went with the Spire, in part because it was cheaper, but also because of very positive reviews. The fan is not that bad. Definitely loud at 12V, but the pitch is reasonable. I'm still waiting to get a fanmate for it, but at 12v for now, it cool...

You may want to think about whether you really need an intake fan. Others with the same case or the AMB version (myself included) have found no real temp benefit from intake fans on this case. You may want to add a smaller, quieter fan for airflow over the hard disks though.

Homebrew arctic cooling. Hot or cold?

As soon as exams are over, I'm finally pacifying my stock 8500le. I managed to eBay a big aluminium heatsink that should fit nicely with a couple notches out for the big caps. The HS is very open, 75*70*30mm tall. To be fair, totally passive it should easily cool the Radeon. I just like the idea of ...

Yes and no. Some fan controllers can shut down the fan entirely.
Even with clock throttling, it seems a small chance that would happen with a 3200+ though.

If you have room to stick a 92 or 120 mm fan in the back, go for it. Your temps seem a little high for sure. Looking at pics of your case http://www.virtual-hideout.net/reviews/antec_perfplus_660b/Image20.JPG it seems to me that airflow at the front for intake is not great. The bezel is too restrict...
