Overclockers.com reviews ANOTHER SilenX product

... and it's written by the same person as the review discussed here . Now, being a fanless design, this PSU should of course be less non-silent than a fanned one, and the review contains somewhat mixed opinions. Two things are bugging me: 1. The conclusion: "The Luxurae is the first passive cooled ...

does the phantom get really hot? thinking of buying one and using it externally, i have a small antec aria case... so the cable lengt should be a problem. Heat is not an issue for me, and nothing to be concerned about if you keep it outside the case. I have a Compucase 6A-21 -- another Sonata clone...

The tale of the Phantom: How I got it for cheap

Hi, just wanted to share (and brag about) how I got a pretty much brand new Antec Phantom for 2/3 of the new price. Saw the ad yesterday at lunch -- someone wanted to sell one. The ad had been in for three days, and the seller had gotten lots of calls. He didn't sell it before, because he didn't wan...

my top priority is system stability. if i do any undervolting, do i risk stability? or is each system different, and you can only tell by trial and error? The answer is yes on both questions. I'm sure someone with a degree in electronics (not me, that is) can explain in detail why enthusiastic unde...

They should change the codename from "Smithfield" to "Blacksmith field". Makes more sense.

Fan header = connector for fan. There is one on the card, which you shouldn't use -- possibly because it's not suited for a larger fan than the card's stock fan.

Considering you have had the PSU for such a short time, RMA it. That's what I would have done. No use in trying to fix it if you have a good chance of getting a new one.

Overclockers.com reviews SilenX Luxurae

Review

Quote from the review: "At $39.95, the Luxurae is a literal steal when compared to other HD silencers, such as GUP's Smart Drive 2002c, which performs worse than the Luxurae but costs twice as much."

Not a very detailed review, but the statement above raised my eyebrows a bit. Comments?

Hi mycode, and WELCOME TO SPCR! Using just one fan adapter inhibits the airflow a great deal. "Piping" not just one, but two, adapters from 120mm to 60mm will do it even more so (only about 1/4 of the surface area left). SilenX fans are low-flow, and have low back pressure, which means cooling *will...

With the config in your sig, you could very well do with a 200 W brick style PSU, but they're expensive. Get a good quality 300W PSU and you'll be just fine (yes, even if you add the stuff you mention). Check the "Recommended power supplies" section on the main site for suggestions. I have a Zalman ...

DijabutiA, I hope you have asked these questions on other sites. The name of this group -- "Cool & quiet VGA" -- says it all; there are not many overclockers here, and your question will most likely already have been answered in overclocking related forums. On the other hand, you just might get lucky!

12 mm corresponds to a hair over half an inch (12/25.4). 8 mm corresponds to slightly more than 3/8" (8/25.4).

Edit: Early mornings are bad for thinking  12 mm is a hair LESS than half an inch, and 8 mm is slightly LESS than 3/8". See HammerSandwich's numbers below.

Re: taking apart a CPU fan

Is it possible to take apart a CPU fan? I want to get at the rotor without the box getting in the way. Thanks! If you mean you want to take the rotor out of the frame, most frames are not detachable -- you usually have to cut the struts holding the motor/rotor to the frame. On a side note: why woul...

Velvet45, your post would be a lot more readable if you could divide the message into sections. It makes it look much less daunting, and it's easier to crosscheck it for information. You can get a Y-splitter and connect more than one fan. Just remember that there is a limit to how many watts is used (6W -- just checked), and the fan headers on your motherboard is also limited in the same way. If my memory serves me right, look at the fan and see which current it's rated at, and ...

I think 7/8" should be enough not to cause extra noise, although a larger clearance would be preferred. I don't know what your present heatsink is, so it's hard to tell which improvements (or lack thereof) you will get.

The mounts on Zalman's passive VGA heatsinks are adjustable, so there should be no trouble fitting them (given that the mounting holes are not extremely close or far apart, of course -- but I doubt there is a problem).

I don't agree with andyb about the oil. I have had good results using it on my fans.

Personally, I was disappointed with the performance of the AC VGA Silencer, but other folks have been more lucky. I swapped it for a ZM80D-HP and am happy as a clam.
