Why wait? Could get your feet wet a little earlier. Y'know, the penguin really is pretty friendly. ;) I am starting to experiment with the Penguin; I'm checking out openSuse, Fedora and Ubuntu. I have to iron out a software/hardware glitch I hit trying to multi-boot my Win XP machinewith Linux (too...

Unless you can convince your customers they want Linux boxes instead of Windows.

AFAIK, Vista gives you the opportunity to take a fast Windows XP computer and pay Microsoft $100-$400 to slow it back down for you. Expect to need 1GB of RAM for your OS alone, 2GB if you want to run any applications. DirectX 10 means you get to buy a >$400 video card to find out if it improves your...

You may need a business license, depending on your local regulations. To expand on angelkiller's example, while you may not need a license to mow your neighbor's lawn, you would likely need a license to run a landscaping company.

Just wondering (Im sort of a noobie on OC front so keep that in mind) how it works. I have read that many users have to use the black slots for mems or it the board won't run stable. Putting the mems in black slot, does that automatically run them in T2? Im thinking that maybe one could put the in ...

Update: Firestix stable at 800MHz (400FSB) 4-4-4-12-2T, tested with Memtest86 and Orthos. Didn't try higher FSB or lower latency for memory, since these settings should be quite adequate. I topped out at 375MHz FSB (CPU 2.625 GHz, 40% overclock) without increasing CPU core voltage and keeping NB vol...

That's my target overclock I think. I have 667 mems and sync'd with 3-4-4-12 timings is what I want. E6600 at 3GHz will suffice. What slots are you using, the black or yellow ones? Does T2 affect performance? Using the yellow slots. 2T seems to be all most people can get at this point with the curr...

Call me Joe: Have you tried oc yet? Please post your results if you have. Im in the process of trying to decide between the p5n-e sli and the p5b series. I've only just started my OC. 333MHz FSB w/ sync'd RAM (4-4-4-12-2T), 2334MHz CPU at stock voltages. Orthos stable blending for 2hrs so far, Spee...

Asus P5N-E SLI. Selected for features (2 IDE channels, 4 SATA, USB 2.0, IEEE 1394) and good board layout. Early reports showed good stability to as high as 500 MHz FSB. Available for approx $130 US shipped (check ZipZoomFly, Newegg). I haven't overclocked it yet (waiting to rebuild in the Antec Solo...

I went with "none of the above". I stretched my budget to cover a P5N-E SLI motherboard with the C2D E6300, Asus 7300GT, and Buffalo Firestix DDR2-6400 RAM, so I cut my cost by trying a Sunbeam Silent Whisper 775. If it's too loud, I'll get something better after NewYear's.

I waited long enough for the P5N-E SLI to come out, so I'm giving that a try, with the C2D E6300, Asus 7300GT, and Buffalo DDR2-6400 RAM. Also trying a Sunbeam Silent Whisper 775 (found it cheap at Newegg - if it's no good, I'll upgrade).

Ninja is nice but very large and heavier than any of the HSFs I listed. Noctua fan looks interesting, but who sells it? I can't find their fans anywhere.

92mm fans for the XP-90 or ultra-90. 120mm for these would not mount with standard clips.

Abit KN9/Athlon 64X2 or Asus P5NSLI/Core 2 Duo: P5N-E SLI

I'm considering an upgrade to my NF7-S/Mobile 2400+ system, and am looking at 2 Mobo/CPU options: Abit KN9 with Athlon 64X2 4200+ (65W Windsor) or Asus P5NSLI with E6300 Core 2 Duo Since this will entail new memory and GPU interfaces, I would also add: Gigabyte GV-NX73T256P-RH (silent pipe 7300GT) G...
