PSU is up and running - no noises so far. can't hear it at all above the (soon-to-be-replaced) stock intel CPU HSF. one thing to note though is that the PCI-E cable took aaages to connect to the PSU - the pins refused to line up! i had to press the connector in whilst jiggling all 12 wires before it...

Anyone here in Australia after some quiet fans? Have moved to an entirely laptop setup so no longer have use for the following: 2x Papst 4412FGL 120mm - $15 each, $25 pair ($35 each new!) http://temp.jw.id.au/fan-1_tn.jpg http://temp.jw.id.au/fan-2_tn.jpg 1x Panaflo FBA08A12L 80mm (zener'd down to 7...

thanks for the replies. i spent all last night searching around the web and found that it is indeed a head parking issue specific to seagate 2.5" hard drives :( the good news is it's very easy to fix. used Notebook Hardware Control to set the performance mode to 254 and that fixed it, but it was a b...

I have to speak out and say that this HDD is NOT recommended. I just bought 2 of these and they both exhibit an EXTREMELY annoying "click-squeak" sound every few moments. It is very audible, and very very annoying! EDIT: Solution to this problem is to use NHC or hdparm to set the hard disk's perform...

Problem with SPCR's top recommended HDD
I just bought 2 Seagate Momentus 5400.3 160GB 2.5" SATA hard drives, 1 for my laptop and 1 for my gf's. According to the SPCR recommended pages, they are the quietest HDD you can get. I couldn't disagree more! Even though the seek noise is relatively quiet, they both exhibit a common problem: every ...

i've played with my gf's msi wind u100 alot recently and it's pretty quiet. i have very high standards silence-wise (my last silentpc was quieter than my monitor) and in my opinion it's definitely quiet enough to be used unobtrusively next to other people, even though you wouldn't call it silent. an...

(Sold) Intel T7100 CPU up for sale
(not sure if this sort of post is allowed, mike delete it if it isn't) ok so i bought a socket P intel t7100 cpu for my htpc, to my dismay the array of choices for a socket P motherboard was fairly lacking. i ended up buying the wrong motherboard (which has now been returned.) my htpc has been finis...

Ok I've updated the watercooling guide with some clarifications on the use of additives; thanks for the suggestion Mike. Info on selecting radiators would be useful, in particular what size with what fans is required for a given system. Radiator size is typically governed by the physical real estate...

this is kinda funny but also kinda sad. Funny because u ran ur system for 3 1/2 years without any maintenance of the loop, and u didnt use anything to protect from algae. On top of that u used some nasty color/uv additive too. hope u atleast used some distilled water... Sad part is that u probably ...

Did you add biocide to the water? That looks like algae. Algae is a good explanation. The coolant additive I used ( Nulon Ultra Cool ) doesn't tout any anti-algae properties so it may have been a wise thing to add :) I just realised that Nulon has another product called Radiator Flush and Clean, wh...

OK I managed to get all the watercooling gear out without spilling any coolant on the computer, the floor or myself. One thing I discovered is that it was not only the tube leading up to the CPU that was blocked; there were several other blocked tubes as well. Given that they obviously didn't all bl...

My watercooling days are over...
Well, it's been a good three and a half years, and my watercooling system has finally carked it. I found it funny that my computer was off when I got home. I turned it back on, but a few seconds into windows it turned itself off again. I pondered for a bit and then checked the water flow - there was...

in theory, a rad with more widely spaced fins presents less backpressure to the fan, so airflow is higher. however there is reduced surface area, so one has to ask if the increase in airflow can compensate for the decrease in surface area; according to chylld's experience, clearly not. howev...

Re: fin spacing
I know this is old but there is so much goodness here. If more fins on the rad equals better cooling then how would fewer fins with more spacing (to let air through more easily) work out? Wouldn't it be quieter with the air not being forced into smaller spaces? Or possibly even run a lower rpm to m...

I have the 240 extreme and that likes either a powerful fans or quieter fans in a push pull setup but I got a 360 gt stealth and their suppose to be better with low cfm. they are thinner with more fins per inch. what model blackice rad do you use? some are for high output fan over 80cfm. i've tried both the pro and the extreme variants. neither of them held a candle to the heatercore in performance at both max fan speed or undervolted. add to that the fact that a heatercore cost me almost half what the bla...

heater cores are designed for high pressure fans not the best choice if you are looking for silence they are designed for high pressure fans, yes, but they work equally well with low pressure fans. in my tests with 2 papst FGLs @ 5v, i got MUCH better performance with a heater core than with a blac...
