Re: Western Digital Red 3TB & 1TB Hard Drives
Maybe you can run some tests to see if you can confirm the dramatic difference in benchmarks compared to the 2TB and above. Very few people seem to have the 1TB, so I rarely if ever see anything about it. Something has to explain the difference.

Re: Western Digital Red 3TB & 1TB Hard Drives
Ah, but TLER doesn't survive power, as I've just found myself with WD20EFRX. I could have sworn I saw accounts stating that it did. I suppose it could be put in Task Scheduler as a startup task easily enough. One other thing: for some reason, I don't see the same throughput as measured by HD Tune th...

Re: Please recommend quiet 5400 drive; haven't bought for a
I would think so too - that the Red drive would give no problems in desktop. I just read that thread. Makes sense. The worst thing that can happen is that a sector goes bad a little faster than usual and your application gets an I/O error. Perhaps this results in a sector lost and a file corrupt. M...

they also say that tler cannot be turned off (i read elsewhere that in older drives it can be): http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1478/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xMzUxNjY3Mjc5L3NpZC82eFFrZjRhbA%3D%3D I was surprised to come across this: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6157/western...

Re: [Automatic] and effective fan for CPU cooling?
No doubt, but their fixed-speed fans, like that one, bottom out at 1000rpm (18 dBA) by default, which is why I mentioned the Zalman as one potential way of dropping it a bit. Interestingly, I see that the CM212+ is supposedly 13dBA at its minimum of 600RPM (mine's typically 700RPM), so I'm not sure ...

Re: [Automatic] and effective fan for CPU cooling?
Sounds like a plan. So you're thinking of something like the Nexus BASIC D12SL-12 with a Zalman Fanmate 2 (or whatever's appropriate)?

Re: [Automatic] and effective fan for CPU cooling?
Did anything become of this? Is there a quieter, variable fan? In an Antec Three Hundred, it's loud enough that I can hear the annoying variation in speed whenever there's the slightest CPU activity. I don't know why it has to react so quickly, but it does.

Re: Warning to all SPCR members: do not buy the WD10EALX
I noticed AAM-related comments on Newegg for WD1002FAEX, indicating AAM does work, but I just realized that they're all at least six months old--which along with what's mentioned early in this thread suddenly makes sense. This is baffling though. For the relatively few people who'd want to use it, i...

That excuse sounds like, well, an excuse. "It was not designed for this and so the outcome can be unpredictable." I'm thinking it was designed for exactly what it was obviously designed for and that the "outcome" is perfectly apparent (disabled, 25.5 seconds, whatever). And wouldn't it be a rare dri...

luna, thanks for that update. That's a good use for Kill-A-Watt: I wouldn't have thought parking the heads accounted for that much. Looking at your earlier post (very high load cycles count for EACS and relatively low for EADS), what environment are you running under? The article below, which is not...

Though the EADS still defaults to every 8 seconds. Do we know that for a fact? If so, I'm curious why my EADS drives aren't showing the higher load cycle counts that my EACS drives are. I'm too exhausted to re-read the thread, but I'm pretty sure it was mentioned back there. Plus, a quick Google ca...

With regards to the WD10EACS vs WD10EADS question, it appears that the latter does not have the same issue. Thank you very much, this was very useful piece of information! Though the EADS still defaults to every 8 seconds. Couldn't that in itself be a problem in the right context? That amount of ti...

IIRC Seagate's PATA drives have AAM preset to "quiet", whereas their SATA drives are set to "performance", hence louder seeks. The settings are hardcoded into the firmware and not user-configurable, due to some patent dispute the details of which escape me. I doubt if the Maxtor-branded Seagates ar...

I have basically the same thing -- STM3320620A -- the Maxtor-branded Seagate 320GB 7200.10 PATA model (AAE), made a couple months ago. No whine, very quiet at idle, very quiet seeks, almost zero vibration. Go figure. The seeks are so hard to hear that when I installed the WD5000AAKS alongside it (wi...

silence_seeker, I don't think you'll find many more people (if any more) who say that it whines. That sounds like a drive with a problem to me. BTW, just so it's added to the thread, here's a rare review of the WD5000AAKS, from PC World Australia: http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/index.php/taxid;213621...

It's very much a YMMV thing: In my case with a 5000AAKS, the idle noise was as low as I've heard in a drive (and nothing remotely resembling a whine or hiss), while the seek noise very much wasn't until I put AAM on 128. Enough people say the seeks are quiet on this drive that I have to wonder if WD...

It's bizarre to me that WD doesn't offer a tool to change AAM when in their specs they cite varying noise levels based on AAM! Furthermore, right from the manual for the WD "AA" drives: The AAM feature allows the host to select the acoustic level of the hard drive. When quiet operation is essential,...

Mario, how old is your 7200.10 320GB? Note that I have one of the Maxtor-branded ones, a STM3320620A with the AAE firmware. It dates to March or so of this year. I can only conclude there are variances within the line, since on no system -- regardless of how quiet a system you have -- could this be ...

jhhoffma, that's interesting about how you found the KS seeks (I never tried that one) to be quieter than the 200GB DM9+. That suggests to me that the KS is quieter than the AAKS, as someone found above, though I don't know how or why. Whether it's on sorbothane or suspended shouldn't affect seek no...

wd theoretically faster but samsung faster in all actual tests(big files, security scan and offics apps). seek times samsung 13.9, wd 13.3. same seek noise but wd has lower idle(something like 25/29db vs 27/29db). this might be because the samsung vibrates more. 400lj(silentpc reviewed this one- go...
