Opterons
Opterons use registered memory. And for that reason, they do not support cool&quiet it seems. Sadly.
That said, and idling Athlon64 without cool&quiet is still cool&quiet!

On my nvidia Ti4200, I filled the depression in the top of the chip package with a thin piece of aluminum that I cut from a single use dish. It may not be perfect, but it works a lot better than filling the gap with just paste. I wonder if this is a sloution for the 'ATI gap' as well. It will have s...

I keep wondering why the heat sink is on the 'wrong' side of the card. Thiswas inherited from PCI, which did it to be different from ISA so slots could be dual purpose. But not it means air has to be taken in through the pci cards, and it limits the space for the cooler. I realize that the current s...

It seems thefan is directly behind an intake grille, is that correct? It may be hetter to use this. Plant a bit taller heat sink there and improvethe exhaust fan. The extra air taken in might give enough cooling to the card. That the fan is remote doesn't really matter. But be very carefulabout not ...

Removing HS from A64
AMD writes to twist the heat sink until it comes off. The bottom should be flat for exactly this reason. This, and the high clamp force, are because thesocket is solered to the board surface; the socket does not have pins. Pulling forces on the socket might damage the solder; hence the pre-load - I ...

Zeners in parallel
Zeners in parallel may o may not share current equally. If they are not identical, the one with the lowest voltage may get most of the current. It is better two put 2 in series instead (of half the voltag each). Aldo keep in mind that the diodes are supposed to dissipate the heat through the wires -...

Ideas for measurement
For noise, use a microphone. Doesn't need to be hi-fi; an omnidirectional electret will do fine. Mount the fan to be measured inside a hard, closed box, with no inside damping. The air flow will be a bit uneven, but this is probably realistic. Mount it in a decent way -maybe on a metal plate with yo...

I think that for a silent case you'd want to use a lot of plastic, dead sounding plastic at that. As for a fan guard instead of a stamped grill: this may be a problem with EMC, as a grill has fairly large openings. That can be changed of course, and a mesh of round wire clamped to the case might be ...

Paste versus pads
AMD 'changed its mind' because of the heatspreader and the socket. The XP chip is easily damaged. Using a pad helps to protect the chip. The A64 heatspreader is bigger. A pad will glue the heat sink to the heat spreader. Removal of the heat sink would need a lot of force. And the A64 socket is small...

AMD recommendation for A64
From what I've read in AMDs information for the Athlon64, too much paste is bad because it will flow out and contaminate the socket. Nothing else. They actually recommend a 0.05 mm layer if I remember correctly. This is 'paper-thin' - but if it would not be pressed out it would be toomuch actually. ...

Indeed the '7 v trick' by wiring between +5 and +12 volt is evil. And the RPM monitoring will not work, as teh signal from the fan is a switch to +5 volt (while the MB expects a switch to ground, or, if you are unlucky, a signal between 5 volts and something higher. Much more sane is to put a zener ...

Running fans at low voltage
A circuit to achieve something like this is not that hard to build - if the fan is reliable once started at the low voltage. I'd connect the - of the fan to ground. +5 volt from the power supply is fed through 1, 2 or 3 diodes (1N400x) to the + of the fan. Each diode drops approximately 0.6 volt. 3 ...

I'd also suggest using a shim of alimunim to fill the gap between chip and heat sink. I do not know i...

Indeed the 'clip force' is quite large these days. And expecially with the small surfae of a bare K7 chip, excess paste will be squeezed out without problem. To it looks optimal if both sides are "wetted" with paste to fill pores, and a small blob is put in the middle that will be squeezed out, thus...

There are not that many nice and big sinks available, and less even that use the standard clip for mounting. The AMD64 is not hot at idle, and the stock cooler isn't that noisy at full tilt either.
