Hello, gentlemen. I received an SL350 with my SLK3700 and upon hearing it in action, quickly resolved to remedy the situation. After removing the 92mm fan entirely, I wired an L1A to the PSU fan header and gave it a whirl. However, even under full load, the fan failed to spin up to any appreciable s...

It has been my experience that a 12cm L1A at 6v (by way of a resistor) is effectively quieter than the same fan at 5v by way of molex modifications. Indeed, while bearing and turbulence noises remain virtually identical, the clicking all but disappears when using a resistor.

Negative pressure is oftentimes a consequence of silent computing as even a slowish intake fan is likely to be audible. Personally, I just use a 5-volted Panaflo to make sure the HDs stay cool and provide a small push for air entering the case.

Antec Sonata First in PC Cooling

Here's an amusing press release that offers 'proof' that the Antec Sonata is fully 3 times quieter than a "comparable high-performance mid-tower case" with "their standard configuration of power supply and fans". Ignoring for a moment the irrelevance of their figures, it's heartening to see manufac...

A man says TruePower 350; a man means SmartPower 350. As to that, I'm running a SmartPower 350 (which I receieved with my SLK3700) with the 92 mm fan removed and a Panaflo L1A (with a 68 ohm resistor - ~8V) in place of the default 80mm fan. Using the time-honored and highly scientific "how warm does...

Even if a small child did manage to get a finger through the bezel, they'd still have to contend with both a (fairly sturdy) dust filter and the fan cutout covering the intake fan.

And heck, who here runs their intake fans at anything approaching high RPMs anyways?

Hi scalar, Panaflo fans, as an example, are rated for operation at 7V. So therefore, application of a 7V supply should not harm them in any way. Scalar was very likely refering to the common "12v and 5v make 7v" mod using standard Molex connectors; with this mod, the concern is not for the fan, but...

It's important to note that for some time now, Zalman has been shipping the 6500B series with metal reinforcers which effectively eliminate the aforementioned problem.

Greetings, good sir. At present, I'm running a 2.4 Ghz P4 with a 6500-AlCu. I'm using the default 92mm fan in silent mode (around 6v) and hover around 44 C while idle and 54-56 C while under full load. I'm running a moderately overclocked 9500 Pro with the default HS and a 7v Panaflo. I play a goodl...

I bought a pair of IBM 60GXPs just a short while before discovering the joys of silent computing; they'd be quite acceptable if not for that infernal high-pitched whine.

Actually, I did peruse that article; unfortunately, it seems to deal primarily with modern PSUs powering modern (and power hungry!) systems.

I was hoping that perhaps someone had some experience running older, less powerful PSUs in a fanless environment.

Fanless PSU Modification

I'm working with an AT-ish PSU rated at 160W. It powers a Pentium Pro 200 system (the PP200 is passively cooled :D) which operates under very minimal loads. How would I go about determining whether or not it would be safe to run the PSU (minus the cover) without a fan?

Thanks,

William
