Re: Silent Ultra-Compact PC Build (Mid 2018)
I think the best SSF is still a BRIX Pro 5775, despite being 3 years old. It has Iris Pro (decent integrated graphics with dedicated RAM), quad core with hyperthreading, space for SSD and HDD. You do have to mod it for quietness, and it lacks fixed function 10 bit HEVC decoding. We are going through...

Fan control software for machine
After updating the BIOS on my modded BRIX GB-BXi7-5775, the fan is audible at idle. So I think I need to go with fan speed software rather than relying on the BIOS. The fan speed software should naturally apply irrespective of who, if anyone, is currently logged into the machine. SpeedFan doesn't do...

Re: Got BRIX Pro, now need DIY help
Thanks for the advice everyone! Nice to have some options! I'll see which one works out. boost: it's a straight Broadwell upgrade to the 4770R model; everything else is the same. I actually don't mind a fan sticking out though! flyingsherpa: I think it's as good as you can expect these days. I have ...

Re: Got BRIX Pro, now need DIY help
Thanks but a hole saw is too round! It should be a square hole about 8cm square and the corners need to be very precise to avoid destroying the power button.
I'm really wondering what a "professional diy" person is called so I can look one up!

Got BRIX Pro, now need DIY help
I was looking for a powerful small system and ended up with a Brix Pro GB-BXI7-5775R. This is working very well but I need to silence it. That means cutting a square in the top cover using a dremel to fit a Noctua fan in, as in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRgNyoiX6Cg Also adapting the fan cable ...

Re: NUC6i7KYK/NUC skull canyon
Well, I bought one... and I'm sending it back. Fast as hell, small as hell, loud as hell. I set this up in my quiet bedroom with my desktop PC inaudible and all I got was steady fan noise and chatter that rose and fell as background tasks in windows 10 kicked in. I tested it again in my living room...

Re: A bad time to buy?
Thanks for the advice. I think I'd like more than shared-memory IGPU for general system performance and also the only IGPU that Premiere CC supports is Iris Pro. The Antec ISK 110 is a very nice design but given that there are no Iris Pro motherboards I'd need a GPU for a self-build which would be t...

A bad time to buy?
I need to build a system for 1080p video editing which means quad core Skylake and low-end discrete graphics or Iris Pro. I'd like to do this soon but the options don't look so great. Option 1: Laptop gaming system from Dell or MSI or HP etc., with i7-6700HQ and something like Nvidia GTX 950m. I'm w...

Re: NUC6i7KYK/NUC skull canyon
I'm very interested in this as I'm looking for a quad core system with low-end-discrete-level graphics for Adobe Premiere and Iris Pro looks like the most power efficient system around. The quad-core Iris Pros are taking a long time to come out. The NUC6i7 is the only one out at a reasonable price. ...

Re: Audioengine A5+ Speakers and Wireless Audio Adapter
1. If by " passive amplification " you mean bi-amping w/ electronic xover No, I mean the normal consumer speakers where you have a separate amp feeding a high power signal to the speakers with a passive crossover there.[/quote] 2. Good amps are cheap these days. Name one. Search ebay for tripath am...

Re: Audioengine A5+ Speakers and Wireless Audio Adapter
If I understand correctly you are contrasting the AE speakers, which use a two-channel amplifier and passive crossovers, with speakers using active crossovers upstream of dedicated mid and tweeter amps in each speaker. Contrasting these (passive design, amp inside one of the boxes) to both regular ...

Re: Audioengine A5+ Speakers and Wireless Audio Adapter
While these speakers are not expensive as speakers go, in the price range you will be much better off going passive with an amp. Good amps are cheap these days. And for only slightly more you can get low end active speakers (i.e. with internal amplification and line-level crossovers) that will massi...

Re: I have just discovered how horrible Fox News really is
Well considering anybody that even remotely does what Christ or Mother Teresa would do is quickly branded a socialist it may be best to take a more detached approach. What would Jesus have done if he came back and took power? (He rejected this in the New Testament accounts but suppose he changed hi...

Re: I have just discovered how horrible Fox News really is
I would agree concerning hardcore marxism, but of course you can have a middle ground - true social liberalism - with state owned energy and local transportation and infra structure, healthcare, more minor monpolies like on alcohol and pharmacies and so on. There are many small, but valueable, demo...

But if you want me to specify: There is no doubt, that the current technological progress will sooner or later lead to the creation of 'androids' (for better or worse), that are capable of performing any job that a human can do. Physically and mentally. At which point human labor ends. Except for c...

Re: South Korea: The Next ‘Free Trade’ Battleground
Jobs are not lost as a result of new technology. They are not lost as a result of international competition. To be more precise, (involuntary) unemployment is not caused by technology, or by international competition. Unemployment is the degree to which the labor market does not clear, and is relate...

Re: South Korea: The Next ‘Free Trade’ Battleground
Ah free trade… Anyone who knows any economic theory understands that free trade has a lot of pros AND cons. In theory, the main advantage of free trade is that it promotes the creation of wealth. This is certainly true; in fact, free trade has been spectacularly successful in creating wealth. I kno...

Silent Energy-efficient (will be keeping it on 24/7) Powerful enough to deal with audio that typically involves 1 stereo track and a minimal processing chain Easy. The lowest-end system won't have problems, but I'd still get a decent system in case you want to do other things with it. It'd be nice ...

DAW is easy. You want and have specced out a gaming rig, assuming SC2 is the game Starcraft 2. Inaccurate title.harve wrote:HMy needs are: a near silent daw (using pro tools8), firewire, capable of running sc2, potential to upgrade to 2 monitors.
