Just trying to put this horribly derailed thread back on track (while at the same time hijacking it :-))... I'm debating whether to go with the WD Raptor (74 gigs) or the 200Gb Samsung 120S for my next upgrade. My rig will not be completely silent either way, I'm looking for a performance/noise swee...

Fanless FX6800 heats up my case... (unsurprisingly)
Ok, so I went ahead and splurged and got myself a fanless Gigabyte 6800. Unsurprisingly, it generates a lot more heat in my case than my old Voodoo3 :-). Therefore, I'm in the market for another fan. Right now, I have one intake fan bottom front, one intake right by the gfx card and one intake for t...

I'm not sure I'd go as far as saying the NX3000 is loud, but it's certainly far from silent in an otherwise near-optimal system... Anywho, I don't have any pictures, but it's really quite simple. The fan sits pretty stably in its place even without the screws. If you squeeze in a small piece of soft...

My cheap-ass 'n easy way to silence a Nexus (or any PSU?)...
Just thought I'd share something really simple and stupid I did yesterday that seems to have worked out well... I had a problem with my rig in that my Nexus-NX3000 PSU was making a relatively large amount of noise. I thought about making a fan swap, but that would mean killing the second-hand value ...

I'm using a Chieftec midtower, and I was thinking I would be ok with two intake fans (80 mm) and two semi-out fans (120mm + 80mm, with the 120 mm being in a PSU duct)). There would also be another 120 mm on the CPU. My other option is to ditch my current setup entirely and just get another case and ...

Ok, how does this sound? I'm not looking for silent, just dang quiet... :-) A64 winchester 2800/3000+ with a thermalright xp120 Silverstone fanless PSU Gigabyte fanless fx6800 Samsung spinpoint 160/200 Gb As for MB, I was thinking along the lines of an Abit AV8. At this point, I have four undervolte...

Ok, so I tried adding an undervolted exhaust fan right by the CPU. It might actually be working. :-) But I still hear that whiny noise from the Nexus, the type of sound is constant, but the volume is changing somewhat depending on what I do. For instance, when I'm reading a PDF document and holding ...

My beef with the Nexus is that it's really quiet on startup and for the next couple of minutes. You get 10 minutes of Doom 3 or whatever and then it's another story. Also, the type of sound that it makes (ie a high-pitch whiny noise) is extremely annoying even though it isn't necessarily loud per se...

fanless psu and cpu cooler system - will this work?
Hi, I'm trying to build a quiet Doom 3-capable system. I'm thinking about replacing my (relatively) noisy Nexus NX3000 with a Silverstone fanless PSU. Now, I know this may mean I would have to get an undervolted Papst as an extra exhaust fan, but that should still be a net gain. Also, for CPU coolin...

Well, the Papst in the PSU is now on a zalman fanmate. Sadly, the noise is still there - it's sort of a high pitch rattling more than plain fan whoosh. The fan doesn't do that when it's not in the case, and when I lower the voltage it gradually, but quickly disappears. The snag is I have to turn it ...

Sirtec 340W w/ undervolted Papst or just a Nexus3000?
Hi, I have fitted my Sirtec 340W with a Papst 80 mm at 12V, and while I was initially very pleased with the results, the noise has been increasing of late (or maybe I'm just getting more picky). I cut out the stamped grill, but now I'm thinking along the lines of undervolting the Papst using a zalma...

1700+ or 2100+? T-bred B or A?
I know this is a common question, but I haven't read a conclusive verdict anywhere: I have a Palomino 1500+. It runs slightly hot with my undervolted Arctic Cooling super silent (can't find a 'real' (Alpha, thermalright, swiftech etc) hsf around here), so I'm thinking an upgrade to a less voltage-ch...

Speaker static - due to magnetic interference?
Hi, I just tweaked my now almost-quiet computer some more by suspending my Cuda and making a 'cast' out of rubber foam for the Papst in my PSU. Although this has made my computer a lot more quiet, I have noticed a VERY disturbing sound from my speakers - they're giving me static (all four channels, ...

El cheapo hard drive suspension
Hi, The main problem with a relatively speaking drive such as a cuda seems to be the vibrations it creates. So why not just suspend it in the case using some strings? If it is suspended with strings from above and stabilized by strings from two sides it shouldn't dangle too much... Too risky? Anyone...

Chieftec/Sirtec 340/360 Watt fitted with a Papst instead
Hi, I just saw this review in German, where they are testing a 340 watt chieftec/sirtec PSU (the same model that I happen to be an owner of) that has been modded with a papst fan to replace the original one. To me, this sounds like a great idea, and I'm wondering if this would be difficult/risky/ina...

Just to straighten things out - the only reference I have seen to the V being even more silent than the IV is the Storagereview.com article that compares a 120 gig V to a 80 gig IV. The latter is allegedly quite a bit louder than the 40 gig IV. I think the reason for this confusion is that we don't ...
