Re: Silencing a super-high-end video card?
There is a difference in terminology between quieting and silencing something. I think you will find it near impossible to silence a 'super-high-end' video card, let alone a pair of them. Water cooling sounds like a good option in your case, though there will be some noise created by the reservoir p...

Re: ferrite chokes on monitor cables....an informal poll
I cannot answer your question directly, as I haven't purchased a monitor in some time, but you can buy clamp on style ferrite chokes such as the one linked below. However I am not sure if all chokes are made equal and what frequencies they address? Would anyone like to chirp in? http://www.mouser.co...

Right now it appears SSDs don't have much of an advantage of traditional magnetic storage in regards to reliability. Re: Electronic Whining Noise Solutions Research Project
I want to say bravo to Mike for coming up with this project. I haven't had any whistling/whining electronics in some time (touch wood), and most of that was associated with CRTs. I do remember reading some where about whining SSDs and other cases of PSU coil whine being induced by SSDs. Needless to ...

Re: Low power Linux: wattOS
Finally someone has published a review of wattOS and it doesn't look too good. According to the guys at Phoronix
WattOS R4 also doesn't appear to have any definitive power-savings advantages over Ubuntu 11.04, but in fact the average power consumption under the Natty Narwhal is slightly lower.

Re: What is head parking problem?
Personally I wouldn't use a WD Caviar Green as my main system drive due to the 8 second head parking. I have heard they may be dropped from RAID arrays if the controller thinks the drive has become unresponsive. If you are using it for a data drive or as an external drive then you should be A OK. Th...

You can check out the StorageReview HDD reliability survey here . It might give you a bit of an idea based on user submissions. Looks like you have to register to see. Is there anyway to look at the results without having to register? Generally how did WD do? Sorry for the late reply. Yes you can b...

Just because my post doesn't smack of fanboyism doest make two instances of firmware related data loss something to be wary of. And I will reiterate my first post "It is good to see Intel have fixed this one" in case quest_for_silence wants to call me ungenerous again.

Re: Big, Fast and Quiet. Anything still available?
Having searched the forum, it seems that the 1TB F3 might have a rather annoying whine, as well as reliability issues, so I'm in two minds now whether to just get a 500GB F3 instead (and maybe a secondary 500GB F2, or something else, for extra storage) :? No whine here from either of my Samsung F3 ...

Re: U. of Bath distributes DC to power library PCs
I am all for new approaches to lowering the use of power in servers and large networks. Additionally saving all that heat in a server room would be super. Since using DC is more dangerous than AC I wonder if they can safely implement this in a home environment.

EADS = 500GB platter with 512-byte sectors
EARS old = 500GB platter with 4K sectors
EARS new = 666GB platter with 4K sectors
There is also a new WD20EARX but the only difference I can see between it and the EARS is its SATA 6 Gb/s connection.

stupid question but do they not ship this thing with a manual or specification?
Edit: I found their manual online and no it doesn't seem to mention the extra header. But if you look at the specifications page Over Here, there is a picture you can enlarge labelling it as an Extra PATA/SDATA Header.

How about removing the DVD drive and either putting it in an external enclosure or using a store bought external ...
