Hmm, tough choice. The dBA@1m of the Seasonic 430 makes the 330 and 380 seem very tempting :). I also don't know if I want another ball bearing fan. It's amazing how much noise I can accept when it is all sleeve/FDB. The Seasonic appears to use the same fan I'm used to, which could be of some help (...

$60? Awesome. I totally forgot to check there. The 3.3v+5v is a bit low, but it otherwise looks very good. I definitely won't beat the cost for something that won't require modding. However, they're price on the 380 is also very good (compare to $84 at Newegg), so I may do that, instead. I'm going t...

Good, quiet, budget PSU
Reference AT thread I'd like to find something under $60 shipped to replace the FSP-300-60PN, that will provide good power, and also be at least as quiet. Future-proofing would be nice, but not needed (24-pin, PCI-E video connector, etc.). I could probably go a little over budget for extra quietnes...

$250US? why would anyone buy a 6600gt at that price when you could get an X800XL? It's brand new. Also, that's the 256MB model. "It is equipped with a graphics processor given rhythm GeForce 6600GT with 500 MHz and with 256 Mo of GDDR3 with 1 GHz." For a 256MB one, around $200 wouldn't be a bad pri...

Materials like MDF are simply not gonna happen for me--too many particulates, and too many chemicals comin' out. Likewise, oak was passed over (my worst plant allergies are lavender and oak). Very cool desk! I did butcher the mobo tray, but the case I just salvaged spare parts from and tossed out. T...

I slam Intel a lot for the awful 197 Watt sucking Pentium 4 Extreme Edition, but really they're a company that tried to make a highly efficient CPU (Itanium) and failed, and so went with clock speeds and anti-competitive practices (Dell payoffs) scraping to survive. Itanium is still their ace in th...

Old New (I couldn't find the hole cover--the pot holder is very temporary!) Excuse the cable management at this time--much of it is likely to be made much nicer later--right now I'm in the process of testing and logging load temps at various settings. The intake fan causes some slight vibration to ...

noone has stated the obvious yet - unless you're only using onboard IDE/SATA ports, any solution will also very quickly be bottlenecked by PCI. hardware vs software on speed alone is pretty much a non-issue unless you're only using a few drives or are using PCI-X controllers. PCIe works too but goo...

Hmmm... perhaps you are right and RAID 5 is the safer way to go. Does anyone know the performance difference between RAID 5 and RAID 0? I understand that you lose in effect one disk-worth of space to parity information. How does parity computation affect the CPU? Software RAID 5 will be slow. Can't...

OK, got one mostly done and somewhat tested (not fully mounted, due to lack of small drill bits ATM). Stenciled . Flour was used to mark the screw holes, then their centers poked through. Partically cut . Corners opened just enough to see how much slack it would make (not as much as I had feared). S...

The main issue is lack of a seal. Yes, I have the same hang-up on this issue as you do. While a lot fan mounting ideas sound very good and are usually cheap/simple, they don't seal the fan very well, which can be an issue if you have some kind of setup where pressurization can be an issue (on eithe...

I've used double-sided tape, but it doesn't last more than a year. I think the heat and humidity get to it, here. Not fun to notice high temps, and find the case fan resting on the video card, whirring away! :) I doubt it would be a problem at all for fans that are pulling into the tape, rather than...

I like the ear plug one :). The main issue is lack of a seal. In the system I'm working with (I'll get new pics up in a bit), the fan needs to be fairly well sealed, as it is going to be an intake, and I wouldn't be surprised if it recirculates some air, if allowed to have the room. Also, if someone...

A simple and effective fan dampener (why can't you buy one?)
Disclaimer: made here because, in searching, far fewer relavent results were coming up in fans & control. Feel free to move. Parts: 1. 1/8", maybe 3/16" or even 1/4", thick silicone rubber fan grommet (treated or coated not to spread acetic acid, if possible--I don't know how that is done). Another ...

Gentoo, even? Awesome. I haven't been able to play w/ any NF4 boards yet, so figured a cautious SI recommendation would be good. I've had trouble w/ mine (Marvell), and read many problems with them and others. But if it works transparently w/ Gentoo, the OP aught to be set--and I think I know what c...

Socket A toolless decoupling options...? (long)
http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=15100 It seemed like it'd be easier, but that thing has hit several snags along the way, and is just now readying to be used for my main PC. The final hurdle is that of vibration. Decoupling the motherbaord from the wood proved to be a daunting, and s...

Even the big guys are finally getting it--sweet
End of august? If it comes in AGP, I might have to upgrade (or wait a bit, and finally justify an A64 upgrade
). I haven't been feeling the safest in the summer w/ a passive 5900XT. This looks like an excellent solution, and w/o warranty-voiding involved, no less.

That should improve things, however the fans will be out of phase (a disaster if you use LED fans!). You can fix this and make it much more noise-friendly by drilling holes in a blade of each fan and putting a metal rod through it, so that they rotate at exactly the same speed. ??? how exactly did ...

That review is not very good. He doesn't state his testing platform. It's very likely that he's testing it in a noisy case with lots of airflow from noisy fans (which completely voids the purpose of going fanless). That would explain the relatively small change in temperature when a fan is added. N...

I found a thread on the nVidia forums where a few 6600GT (fanned and passive) users are complaining of load temps exceeding 90C. Think they just have piss-poor case cooling, or do these cards run hotter than average? And it looks like the GigaByte 6600GT SilentPipe is finally available in the U.S.:...
