Shuttle xs35gt

The new shuttle which all passize cooling looks like something all SPCRs dream about. http://www.shuttle.eu/products/ultra-small/xs35gt/overview/ Put in a small SSD for booting OS, and everything streamed over LAN. The perfect HTPC. I´m having one. Maybe two. (If I only could find a store that sell...

The best combo I´ve found is a remote (Logitech Harmony 555 for me) and the Airmouse app for Iphone. Airmouse has keyboard functionality and trackpad, so I don´t need to break out the keyboard & mouse. I set up Mediaportal to start automatically on boot so I only need the mouse when the odd OK box...

Thanks for all the replies.

I tried different versions of Linux, but it seems none of the worked well with the built in ATI gfx card. So I got a Mtron 3500 32 GIG and I'm really pleased with the result. Highly recommended.

I just think that having a server w lots of space on traditional HDDs hidden away where noise isn't a problem, and a small SSD w the just the OS on the computer I use is a better solution.

A small SSD is not that expensive either.

Is there really any point in reviewing disk based storage anymore? With all the wonderful SSD options out there (Intel, Mtron and maybe the new models from OCZ to name a few) I can't see what the point is for SPCR spending time on the noisy & warm HDD options. Sure, it is cheaper. But this forum is ...

Thanx for the review, man. I bought the eeebox, and although it is nice it isn't as quiet as I had hoped. I looked to the new Dell, and was wondering if I had put my money on the wrong horse. Glad to read that isn't the case. Keep up the great work Mike! btw: pre1014: you might reconsider your overu...

It just struck me:
I have a fairly fast memorystick.
Why not install Ubuntu on it, and ditch the HDD? I use the computer for streaming video from a lan server, so the I/O is not really important for its primary use.

Boot over [LAN]

I have a Acer L5100 which is not so quiet. I'd like to experiment with pulling out the hard-drive and making the computer boot over lan from a server I have.

It has Vista Home Premium installed.

Is this possible, and can anyone point me towards resources regarding this?

Sorry for the late reply. Last time I tried to move a windows installation, (WinNT) it freaked out because it was loading from a different disc-controller (from ATA to SCSI) Maybe this has been improved now? I'll look into it.

Yep.

Also tried speedfan. It seems it can't slow the fan down below what they are already spinning.

Does anybody make a controller for such a fan?

Slowing down the fans on a Acer Apsire L5100

Hi all. I recently bought a Acer Aspire L5100, since it looked nice and had an external PSU. I thought that should make it quiet. Well all things are relative, and this is too loud for me still. I opened it up and found the fan connectors to be 4 pin. http://www.diskusjon.no/index.php?act=attach&typ...

I'm thinking of pulling out the hdd of my Acer Aspire L5100. However I don't have a Vista disk. Only a recovery disk.

Is it possible to move the installation over to a flashdisk? You see I spent two weeks removing crapware and getting a usable setup on the hdd.

I stuck mine in a cupboard under the tv. I covered the insides with accoustic absorbingmats. Even the doors. the cupboard is fairly low and has two doors. The videocard is deifinetly overkill, but it is the only card I can find that does the job. (It is 128 mb)
The price will be about 13.000 NOK (around 2200 USD), which is ok.

I run a lot of plugins which draw alot of power, and I´m interested in getting into impulseresponse reverbs.

There is a norwegian review at hardware.no which says eventhough it´s a bit fiddly to install the mobo, the noise and the price outweigh these problems. MikeC: Will we see a review here soon?
