underclocking new p4?
also, take a look at this recent article: http://www20.tomshardware.com/motherboard/20040916/index.html they say that you can overclock a p4 with a new 915/925 asus board. of course they don't discuss underclocking/undervolting, but more control is a good thing, and could be promising. of course, th...

abit nf7 v. nf7-s2
the nf7 was pretty good, with a minimum of 1.1 volts (my mobile athlon wasn't very stable below 1.25v though), but the nf7-s2 is useless. barring a bios revision, i think the lowest it goes is 1.5v, ug.

i really like the casetronic cases - this one allows a 3.5" hard drive, a slim cd, and has an external power brick, no power supply noise at all! with no expansion cards, you should be able to get away without a fanned power supply altogether!

Hello Edward: The think I'm interested in id the 1" microdrive "flash drives" -- 2.2GB for $200-ish, and I think they are faster than the flash RAM units, too. those are spinning drives though, i think 4200 rpm. i had one, my friend dropped it, and it broke. :( i've seen seek times from 5-20 ms, re...

i've installed windows on a couple kinds of cf cards - the sandisk ultra II was the only one that was really tolerable (speedwise), though the traditional variety does work. i didn't benchmark it, but the ultra II 'feels' much like a more expensive ide flash drive. you can also put your swap on a se...

My friend seems to think that when things run hot (computer components) they run slower... Now I know this is not true, but can anyone throw some information at me so he will finally believe me that waht he's saying isn't true? Thanks someone correct me if i'm wrong, buy my physics classes way back...

FWIW - my system came by way of http://www.peacefulpc.com/ - I bought one of his test systems off of eBay. The totally silent Scythe, Flash IDE and VIA M10000 with 98SE really is a great combo. outside venting
here's a more helpful possibility (though i think techtv did once do a fridge based pc) get a flexible dryer vent - some are six feet long! connect to the back of your case, put a powerful a/c fan on the other end, preferrably outside of your apt. this solves a couple issues: it'll be quieter, as th...

move the beer and moldy stuff out of the fridge, put your computer inside! drill a hole for your cables (fill with silicon) and you have a quiet and cool-running system!

dead silent
Given that pretty much everybody in this thread has said that their UPS is silent or virtually silent (i.e. no noise beyond 50cm or so), what's the point of SPCR doing a comparison? IMHO, such a comparison wouldn't be very useful, at least, not if what's being compared is the sound output of variou...

we used to lose thousands of dollars of equipment every year (hd and ps, mostly) - all from sags/brownouts. on one noteable day, we lost half a dozen power supplies, 5 hard drives, and 2 motherboards. we first went with the less expensive type that does non-active filtering, and loss across our 800 ...

zalman fanless case
i second that recommendation.
yes, it's huge.
yes, it's expensive.
but you can get it and still come in under 3k, and not have issues about fan voltages, temperature problems, etc.
good luck!!

that is true! i have the barton core, 1.35v. i've read that some folks are running it at 1.1, maybe at a higer multiplier/fsb than i am? i'm pretty happy with the performance and heat at 1.2/5x/100, so i haven't delved much further. Re: nf7
the abit nf7 goes down to 1.1, but with my 2200+ mobile, it's unstable under 1.2 or so. it is very stable at 1.2, 5x multiplier and 100 mhz fsb. you could probably tweak it down stably to 400 if you experimented a bit... good luck! i love my 6070's - very roomy and easy to work on. built-in fan speed control switch for 2 front fans, nice rubber sealed bezel door. a bit too deep maybe, and you'll want to chop out the rear fan grill, but overall a snazzy case.

pod03 could you post your AutoFSB settings for us to take a look at. I would ideally like to build a fanless computer. Do you need a fan to cool the processor at 4.7w? you can put together a completely silent system based on the via boards mentioned above. and i mean completely silent - no moving parts=no noise. while this is a bit of a plug for my systems (www.peacefulpc.com), it's not hard to find all the parts i use and slap it together yourself for basically t...
