Is there enough benefit from the Active PFC model in the expert opinions here to make it worth the extra $5? I don't know anything about that new PSU, but yes the xtra $5 is well worth it. If your electricity provider charges for harmonics, you'll easily save that amount over the life of the PSU (m...

Re: Silencing my noisy dual MP
Im a little uncomfy with the temperature readout, as I used to be at 35 and 40, and now Im at 50 and 60C. Dont know if this is tolerable, given the (presumed) inaccuracy in the motherboard temp readings. Can't add much to what you guys have already mentioned, but FYI, your temps are fine for that m...

My best suggestion would be to try and use air that is as cool as possible for the Aeroflow intake. That might mean ducting in fresh air and/or optimizing case airflow. Search the forums for the words "duct*", "undervolt*", "temp*", etc... You should be able to undervolt the fan a little extra and f...

aphonos, In testing my batch of NMBs I've experienced the same problem. What's even weirder is that I was using fancontrol's rpm sensing circuit to get rpm readings (my NMB's have no rpm sensing). As soon as I undervolt it the readings get funky. They must have a different kind of design under the h...

Can you try pointing the fan closer or from a different direction?Flip wrote:There is a fan above the video-card and the case temp is 32C. The ZM-17 gets very warm but not too hot to touch.

Re: Silencing a floresent light...
Your best option may have to be not to use the ceiling fluorescent at all... and use a bright task lamp instead. Or move the computer to a different part of the room. High wattage halogens are said to be a fire hazard. I'd stay away from them. I've heard as high as 1000 degrees (F/C?) versus 130 for...

Re: Are there any quiet full tower cases???
The only full tower in the recommended cases list is the Antec 1080. I don't find many others in searching this forum. Are there any other full towers that people can recommend? I dunno if they make it anymore, but Antec has a taller version of the SX1040/1080 - the 1280. There may even be a 1440 m...

Re: Originally was going to model after PowerGyoza
Originally I was going to use the plumbers tape as a heat pipe to conduct heat out of a box like Leo's (PowerGyoza's) Printer's Block Linoleum but I never got around to buying it. Leo, It should be an easy mod to add the tape and you should get a good drop in temp. I bought solid copper plumbers ta...

I tried the above circuit with slightly different components and couldn't get it to work. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. I used a 4004 diode instead of 4001, I had it in the right polarity since turning it around stopped the fan. I used a 2200uF capacitor instead of the 3300uF shown in the pictur...

Perhaps a similar design which allowed airflow over the top/bottom would be thermally safer? Maybe, but only if fresh air could come in and the warm air could get out more easily.... A zener diode like the one in this circuit http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?p=6243 will allow for a minimum voltage to always go through, but it won't help you with supplying a full-power jolt on startup. So, in that case, my question revolves specficially around gains in airflow for exhaust rather than more efficient cooling of the PSU. IMO, if you improve one, you'll generally improve the other. At some point though (in situations of high heat dissipation from 2 CPU's like I do, or 1 hot CPU + 1 h...

What really goaded me into this is the "do you hear it folding" tag on our team stats page: it was a perfect knife in my ribs cause I had virtually silenced my systems, but only as long as they were doing very little. Almost 10C from undervolting 0.2V is very nice. You should be proud of your achievement. You have basically freed extra thermal headroom for undervolting your fans. Of course we all approach the point of diminishing returns. Or we run into other bottlenecks that hinder lower temps/better silencing. ...

As long as you have good case airflow, I don't see any problem with replacing the old fans. Heck, you're drawing so little power, I'd just stick with a single fan. Cover up the hole left by the 92mm fan and twist the vertical grills on the intake 90 degrees for less airflow restriction and you'll be...
