I'm in the same boat, trying to decide between P55 and X58 for a new build. Two big pluses in P55's favour are the passive cooling and lower power consumption. That means it should be easier to build a quiet system on that platform. However, according to reviews the P55 consumes a lot more power whe...

I wonder if a Thermalright V1 would be able to cool this thing? I have a 1st-gen V1 cooling an overclocked 7800GT CO right now with an undervolted 80mm Nexus on it. It hits about 68-70 Celsius after several hours at load, and idles between 38 and 45 at idle depending on the room temperature. Judging...

Either a rocket nose cone or a cone from a model airplane propeller. I've seen that done actually to nice effect in several mods for aesthetic reasons.
www.mnpctech.com pioneered it IIRC.

At the risk of bumping an old thread, I just wanted to report that I've successfully used the V1 on my 7800GT CO. :) I have an 80mm Nexus fan mounted on the top heatsink, and a 80mm Panaflo fan sitting on the case floor (on sorbothane) between the card and my hard drive rack at the front of the case...

init: Whether a striped page file causing a hard drive to remain spinning is "bad" depends on whether you can hear your hard drives in the first place. :) I personally reject the idea of allowing my hard drives to spin up and down all the time since I'm more concerned with longevity than noise. So far, I'm running a week with no virtual memory (swap file) and everything is running perfectly. You still don't understand. :) All you're doing is removing one form of paging. Apps that request more virtual address space than you have physical will still get it, and memory will still be paged to...

Google for Mark Russinovich's take on this. (Sorry I'm too tired/lazy to dig up the link.) TomZ: no disrespect intended, but I wouldn't discount that thread at ArsTechnica; if it's the one I'm thinking of then IIRC it included posts by someone who is exceedingly intimate with XP paging at the kernel...

"rich" (a user in these forums) is using a V1 on his 7800GT. The only difference between the V1 and the V1 Ultra ultra has a third heatpipe the non-ultra heatpipes extend about 4mm further away from the card the non-ultra heatsink has some slots where the ultra has none In a review comparing the two...

I recently was also unpleasantly confronted with the horrible noise coming from my XFX 7800GT card. I considered the zalman or the Silencer. But reviews on the noise were not convincing. At the end I decided to take a chance and buy the Thermalright V1. I know it is not suppose to be compatible, bu...

A bit more snooping and I spotted this:

Very much what I was thinking of, although I would make it shorter (vertically) to keep the lower PCI slots usable.
I wonder if a VF700 would work better than the V1 Ultra for this type of mod?

After staring at my case for a while, I'm not sure how well my idea would work, actually; there isn't much room in front of the card, and the power cord makes positioning the fan a bit of a problem. One thought leads to another, though, and I have to wonder how hard it would be to duct the two heats...

I've been toying with the idea of getting a V1 Ultra for my 7800 GT CO. One thing I've thought of trying is to put a 120mm fan in front of the card -- towards the front of the case, in other words. My thinking is that it would direct air at both heat sinks and towards the rear 120mm fan, and take so...

I wonder if waxing the blades interferes with the laminar air flow? That could makes dust collection worse - instead of flowing around the tiny layer of air, the dust particles actually manage to come into contact with the surface of the blades? Or does waxing give plastic a static charge? Be intere...

Writer, get your information straight. A 7800 GT uses 57 watts. even overclocked it is likely under 65W. Well, this is certainly embarrasing. JVM: The S12 500 and 600 are both on nVidia's SLI certified list. The 500 should be far more than enough for a lone 6600 GT. The only difference is that the 600 can put out more power on the 12V lines, and costs a bit more. LURKERS: It all depends on what you're putting in your system. The correct w...

Cut out rear fan grille on Centurion 5?
I'm in the middle of modding my Centurion 5, and have been trying to decide if I need to cut the rear fan grille out. I've always done this with my cases as a matter of course, but the rear grille on the C5 is (a) pretty open honeycomb and (b) a "raised" design that looks like it would end up in a p...

I've had good success using the round (well, cylindrical actually), black foam Shop Vac filters. Just cut it along the seam and you have a very effective filter that isn't overly restrictive. It's the filter that is meant to go around the float mechanism. A pleated filter will probably perform bette...
