Nice system. A little too pricey for my needs. I don't really care about 3D graphics performance, and have a hard time paying $200 for a processor. Also, I don't see the need for a 64 bit processor. jerry thought you said time for a new system. :D why no A64? there's no price premium on them any mo...

well, if it's the client, what's the other stuff have to do with it? ignoring that, if azureus seemed to be using an unreasonable amount, i'd probably use bt++ or bittornado instead, as well as kill all that norton crap (and any useless services) :) could also try different VMs too i guess, see if i...

yeah. look how crappy ventilation is around most appliances and none ever seem to have problems because of it. i don't think i've ever seen a fridge with more than an inch of space around the sides/top. :)
of course TVs are different, but not like it's a huge CRT.

I think it really needs to be brought into comparison with qwerty speed. I know that personally, I still make a lot of mistakes. My backspace key is easily the most used key on the keyboard. And most of it are the same mistakes that I made before (e.g. just now I typed in 'keyborad'). Assuming you ...

i'd love to try dvorak and have thought about it a few times, but the change would kill me, i already type 120wpm or so using qwerty. :?

not that big a deal, aside from crappy shipping costs if you're really far away... just be sure to write something like "RETURNED DEFECTIVE MERCHANDISE ORIGINALLY FROM <country>" on the box

To combine the original topic and MikeC's potential project, I see the entire issue as the following: huge post yes, exactly - watercooling in and of itself isn't very effective because you have to get the heat to the water and then air-cool the water, whereas with air you basically have an infinit...

off-topic, but i can't help but ask, how exactly do you have different levels of compression if it's lossless, when still using the same codec? go from stereo to mono? :P
or do increasing levels require huge increments in cpu power?

think the general consensus is that CPUs also have to obey the 10C difference = 50% difference in life approximation, but that it doesn't make much difference. i personally think a CPU will normally outlive just about everything else in a PC if you turn a computer on and let it sit there for 10 or 2...

i think the stock fan was just out of paranoia - i even had a P133 that had a fan on its heatsink. on the other hand, my ppro 200's stock cooler is just a passive heatsink, and the assumption with those is that they'll be on and doing stuff all the time, and on top of that they use like 2-3x as much...

hmm, that makes sense too, i was just figuring it'd (bad analogy alert) sort of work like a double-paned window. harder if the welds are necessary, i think with a flat panel you'd just end up with two pieces stuck together with practically no space between them, unless the process of welding itself ...

two different ideas, sheet metal with a gap between the layers would be pretty easy to do in a PC case though, actually... hmm. if this is all it takes, you wouldn't need to weld it even - just cut sheets to line your case two layers deep, and separate them with washers or so. only really easy way t...

you could just use a cooler with your existing water cooling, with the evaporator in your wc reservoir, i think that's a nice intermediate - don't have to go to as much effort, and you're not (basically) limited to only cooling your CPU.

simply putting a PC in any sort of fridge is a terrible idea, they're made to insulate more than cool... if they're powerful enough you can rip the condensor/compressor etc out of the fridge and reuse them though.

generally, faster (and disproportionately more expensive) CPUs made on the same process (any given one) won't overclock as well as the lower-end ones... not a big deal if one is intent on throwing their money down a hole, but sort of justifies simply spending less and still overclocking. not to ment...

Why do people overclock? Just for fun? well, if you buy a new CPU, you can basically get several hundred dollars of capacity for free, because of huge price premiums for the top of the line. ie, buy a $170 A64 3000+ and a relatively paltry 20-25% oc will effectively get you a CPU worth $650 more. t...

i'd say bigger, for the same reason a lot of cooling methods for overclocking are also good for being quiet (when they don't involve huge/fast fans), it just gives you extra overhead. a bigger case would normally let you organize cables/components better, give more leeway for suspending drives and m...
