By the way, the Commando has 8 fan connectors! You don't get anything like the huge range of control options that Abit's FanEq gives you though... I find it so bloody hard to tell by looking at the manuals. For example, the QuadGT manual, as far as I can tell, has no info on fan control. But assumi...

But if you do want to provide cooling to the VRMs you can always choose a heatsink such as the Thermalright SI-120 that will provide excellent cooling to the motherboard VRMs. I would probably go this route if I could verify that it doesn't negatively impact the air flow in an Antec SOLO / P150. Ma...

Operandi, over-analysis is an occupational hazard. Besides, I'd rather over-analyze than under-analyze, and make a mistake I have to live with for 5 years (I tend to keep my computers a long time). I'm hoping that what you wrote will indeed prove to be the case for me (that there will be enough air ...

What you said makes perfect sense. But I wonder what using an HSF that blows down onto the motherboard would do to the airflow pattern in an Antec SOLO? I'm certainly no expert, but it seems to me that might be less than ideal. Maybe the best thing to do might be to cut the pipes out. :( At the mome...

So that's why so many people talk about clockgen! Thanks, JaRoD, for the info. Sounds like a good way to go if I don't go with abit. I eliminated nvidia chipsets from consideration due to their higher power consumption and heat output. Doesn't seem worth the somewhat higher performance to me. But, h...

Hopefully we'll get some comments from others, especially about the heatpipes. I think I read the same post you did, and that was what prompted me to start this thread. On the low end, there's no doubt that 965 boards are quite a bit cheaper than 975 boards. But once you move up from there, it becom...

Motherboard heat pipes, digital PWMs, etc: Hype or help?
So, I’m building a new system. I’ve got all the parts (see list below), except a motherboard & cpu. Been that way for almost a month now. The cpu will be either an E6400 or E4300. I hope to overclock to 3GHz (though preferably only when needed for video or photo editing; the rest of the time sto...

I just read the article a few hours ago, and I don't remember reading that (though I did read it pretty quickly). Everything I've read so far on the E4300 seems to indicate it does have Speedstep. Here's an X-bit Labs article that shows the only thing it's lacking is Intel VT (which was also mention...

Pauli, that link didn't work. What was the board?Pauli wrote:This board is very nice and has absolutely no problems with the Ninja Rev.B. I set one up for my brother a few weeks ago and the installation went without a hitch.

These are pricey fans. I think I'll stick with Yate Loons, but here's a company that sells the NF-S12-800s & -1200s for $17.57 and claims they are in stock: http://www.us.ncix.com/search/index.php?q=noctua&minprice=Min.+Price&maxprice=Max.+Price Resellerratings shows this place seems safe enough to ...

check with the compatibility data provided on Scythe website to confirm that this version will fit on your motherboard. Too bad Scythe doesn't do a better job of listing compatible motherboards. There is only Gigabyte Socket 775 motherboard listed, the DS4, which isn't sold in the US. There are sev...

Thanks, Neil. Unfortunately, from what I've read, I tend to agree. I say unfortunately, because I just bought the SOLO about 5 minutes before getting notice of your post! Talk about poor timing. I preferred the SOLO because it sounded like an easier, cleaner install (not to mention Fry's has a great...

The Cooler Master CM Stacker might be a good "future proof" investment (though it costs 2x as much as many other cases). It's an ATX case, but it can be converted to a BTX case by just moving around some parts.there are no BTX cases available

Hmmm. I see the 'v' very clearly; not sure how I managed to miss it when typing. Sorry about that. :) Thanks, that makes me feel better about using a lower-powered PSU. Last night, I swapped the PSU in my wife's computer (which had a VERY noisy, very old Seasonic) with the 300W freebie that came in ...

Thanks for the reply, silverarg. I had quickly looked at the thread you mentioned, but didn't read it far enough. Now I found, on page 3, the link to takaman's Power Supply Calculator , and that was interesting. It calculated that I needed only a 248W PSU ... but 16.2A or above on the +12V line. Ouc...

Mobo manual recommends minimum of 350W PSU -- Needed?
Do I really need to heed the recommendation in the motherboard manual? I'm still in the process of spec'ing my system components, so I haven't bought the mobo yet. But the manual is online, and here is what it says: If you intend to use a PSU with 20-pin and 4-pin power plugs, make sure that the 20-...
