Wow.... my 9800XT Idles at about 62°C and after playing games, gets into the high 70°'s. Thats with an ATi Silencer 3 rev1 running at default voltage.
Its not so silent....

I have suspended 3 of my 3.5" drives in the lower drive cage of my PC-61, with aluminium U Channel for cooling The problem was, the drive cage did not have the horizontal holes for feeding through the elastic, so I screwed in the little 'divider' metal piece, that was designed for mounting 3.5" hdd'...

Dont quote me on this, but I believe a few months ago when I was reading some of the fan control articles on the site, it was suggested to use Zener diodes to drop the voltage of ur fans. They mentioned that with those diodes, it will still provide the full 12V when starting up, then drop it down. S...

I noticed a dramatic decrease in the high pitch whine from my western digital after elastically suspending it. I modified my Lian Li PC61 lower drive cage so I could have 3 suspended drives in there (Baracuda IV, 7200.7 and WD .. whatever). My PSU is still far too noisy... and no one in Australia st...

I recently suspended 3 of my drives (Seagate Baracuda IV, Seagate 7200.7 and WD 120gig). Firstly I had the WD 120gig and the 7200.7 in the lower cage suspended, and the Baracuda IV in the upper cage. I think the high pitch whine was all but GONE. I didnt really notice its absence until I redid the s...

HDD Suspension experiences, and strange idle noise?
Every since I found this site, I've become obsessed with PC noise, and ways to eliminate it. After reading a lot of the articles on hard drive silencing, I decided my next step would be to suspend my 3 hard drives. My current setup is: P4 2.4c with XP-120 heatsink and Panaflo low speed 120mm fan run...

I painted a beige pioneer drive bezel before with no problems. The cover for the actual drive tray just slides off vertically, and slides back on just the same . Just needed to get a paperclip in the lil hole to manually eject the drive, so I could slide it off (otherwise the rest of the bezel would...

How much power a PSU is drawing
Well, I've read the articles on Power supply fundamentals and a few forum threads on similar topics, but this is more just to try and settle something. On IRC I was chatting with some people, and when one of them said they were about to buy a 520W power supply, I joked at what the hell they were goi...

well, the more efficient the PSU, the less heat it produces if I understand correctly? Therefore, less heat means it requires less cooling, and thus less noise. :) Of course, there are considerations, like how easy it is to swap a fan out, or poor thermal fan controllers that could undo the good wor...

Power Management: Powering down only 2 hard drives out of 4
I have (unsure of model numbers): 1.) Seagate 80gig 2.) Seagate 120gig SATA 3.) Western Digital 120gig SATA 4.) IBM Deskstar 30gig The western digital and the deskstar are probably the noisiest components in my system. They're also the two drives I dont often access (they're sort of long term storag...

A bit of a different ducting method
A mate of mine pasted this link to me in IRC: http://www.overclockers.com/tips1187/index.asp Looked like a very interesting idea, was wondering what everyone thought? Thanks for the advice, I might try that ;) If I remember my Diode theory correctly, its because a voltage of ~1.8v is required to jump the P/N Boundary within the diode.... or was it 0.8v :? Modifying a Rheobus fan controller
I just recently bought a 3 channel rheobus to tame my fans.. and I'm thus far very disappointed with it. For one, it has 2 BRIGHT Blue LEDs for each of the 3 Rheobus's. Also on the minimum setting, the voltage is still at 6.8 Volts. I'd like to get it to go down to 5. Anyway, I'll pulled it apart, a...

hmmm.. ok upon doing a bit of reading, I'm a little less against suspension of drives. Does seem like it can be done fairly securely if you do it properly. Of course, the main worry then, is temperature. I downloaded DTemp, and found both my seagates running at 30°C which is lovely, and the Western ...

Yeah, my VGA cooler isnt a main source of noise... its just a REALLY ineffective at cooling it. I'm not sure what standard idle VGA temps should be, but ~70°C seems a bit high (and over 80° when in games!). So I worry that when summer hits I'll see problems. I'll give some thought to the Arctic cool...

dont panic, but it could be your CPU ;) In summer my P4 2.4c with stock cooling was running mid 50's idle. And at a LAN it read as being 63°C idle. Also, if you have an Abit motherboard, they use a different method of measuring CPU temperatures (so I've read), and thus they wont be consistent with m...

thanks for the tips. I'm sure my CPU would survive... my concern was, that I'd need to bump up fan speeds in summer. I may just go all out and get the XP-120.
