I did not even realise such an old CPU has a max power dissipation of ~35w, should be much less in typical operation. Good point.. You can still keep it cheap by leaving the fan on the HS at a constant 5v, it should be more than enough. I run a 50W+ cpu at a constant 5v fan with both stock Intel HS ...

Yeah XP (uses socket 462) HS should be more than fine. As long as nothing is in the way of it, to make good contact with the CPU. Yes 5v should be fine, the power draw of your system is so low that even with bad efficiency PSU, your unlikely to damage anything. And if it does well it was time for a ...

Re: why not have all case fans point inward?

Is seems to make sense. thise way air will be forced to gout our via psu. Also cold air will go driectly to teh cpu. I"ll be trying it tonight (maybe as soon as i finish my hw. Only worry is that the hot air being pushed out by the psu, will be sucked in by the reversed exhaust fan. Maybe a chimney...

Place a cheapo LARGE p4 or socket462 HS on it (<300g ones) or similar. Use thermal glue such as AS to stick it onto your CPU. Use a rope and tie to the motherboard (like a large elastic loop that goes around the CPU HS + mobo). Do it both ways so you get a criss-cross. Who cares it's only a p2-233, ...

Yah it's just matter of days or maybe week(s) before the SATA's are available. They sent samples to Computer Shopper (UK) for review and it's faster than the PATA version. It stated it was available at http://www.savastore.com but when I checked it was not there yet. Should be soon though. This HD i...

Thanks all for your feedback on the Nexus fan. Can someone please describe how much air it pushes at different voltages compared to the Panaflo L1a or similar?

Would you say, for the same amount of airflow, is it quieter than the 80L1a?

I think you can achieve a dramatic reduction in noise without costing you hardly anything. Before I found SPCR, I spent a small fortune on quieting components because simply I did not know what or how to get a computer quiet. It can be done quite cheeply now. 1. Undervolt or swap PSU fan and have it...

It's a matter of airflow over noise, I would personally go with 2x 80mm Nexus fan over 1x 120mm fan, if noise is of the utmost importance. I can tell you an 80mm L1a @ 5v is inaudible unless you stick your ears very close to it. 2x this is still inaudible. High recommendations so far for the nexus f...

Re: quality control issues?

I was disappointed with the one panaflo 80mm l1a that I bought. The thing clicked noticeably at 12v and I had to back it off substantially before it went away. The PC P&C fans I bought don't have this characteristic and are good performers even when undervolted. Maybe its simply the luck of the dra...

Is it possible to have the fan shut of entirely at low speeds, or would this cause the temperature to raise too high? It's almost impossible to have the fan shut down completely, the temps would just rocket too much with normal HS. Anything above 20W is almost impossible to cool passively without f...

From my experience with a sample size of 5, they are not as quiet as the Panaflo 80mm L1a. They are good airflow fans that produce more air, and hence more air turbulance noise. The sound is smooth and hardly makes any bearing/motor noise. I noticed with these fans they can get out of balance, if th...

For silence you must undervolt them, of course - but then they make this consistent "motor ticking" noise that is easily more annoying to me than any other fan I've ever used. The number one cause of noise from fans is air turbulance. Generally speaking the lower the airflow, the less noise they produce. Other factors such as bearing/motor noises and vibrations effects the sound quality. In this respect the Panaflo L's are very good, they produce very little bearing/moto...
