For the HDD topic, it seems to me that some laptop HDD are really quiet (e.g. Fujitsu). Now, they should perfectly fit into a silent drive ... wouldn't that be (near) silent) ? Well the good thing about laptop HDD they produce very little heat. In laptops they are usually confined it tight areas an...

Refering to the "Running a PSU with a fan?" article, what might work are Seasonics SuperSilencer (high efficiency) PSU mounted outside of the case and mounted vertically. The Super Silencer is more suited in this case than the Tornado: 1. Larger HS. 2. Better airflow direction. (cool air coming in f...

Frozencpu.com is selling some kind of liquid "phase change" solution (Nanotherm PCM+). It's supposed to be much better + easier to apply. NO NO NO!! Don't use that stuff. It eats away at the material of your heatsink. There's a big thread about this over at OC forums in the Cooling forum (and some ...

I use to have that motherboard and the general consensus from previous discussions in the forums, is that the Asus QFan is useless. It hardly ever reduces the voltage by much, unless your system runs extremely cool. At best it only reduces to about a third of 12v.. Get a Zalman fanmate to play with ...

Samsung Spinpoint P80 (SP1604N) wins PCPRO(UK) roundup.
For those who come from the UK many will know the reputable computer magazine PC PRO. In the hard disk roundup including the new Seagate drives this is the quietest (No barracuda IV mind you). It has knocked off the previous IBM 180GXP from the A-list top spot. To read the review visit http://www.pc...

Re: Undervolting inabilty, why?
* When you refer to a mobo as undervoltable, do you mean that its not undervoltable in BIOS but it could be possible with jumpers? If a board is not undervoltable it does not matter which way you use, you can't undervolt it. * Do newer boards have jumpers for settings, that has to do with vcore at ...

The latest P4 HSF's are thermister-controlled, I believe. What effect does undervolting have on the thermister and thence fan speed? I believe most, if not all P4 HSF are thermally controlled. When you undervolt say with a fanmate or otherwise to 5v, what happens because the HSF will stay relativel...

The Intel HSF@5v is fairly quiet even in low ambient noise levels, so I would advise just undervolting. It has a very good cooling performance at low voltages. We are only talking a few degrees compared to the best HS with a Panaflo or equivalent at 5v. The only notable noise you get is a slight whi...

Removing the PSU case actually reduces cooling ability according to this article. Running a PSU without a fan
It seems tunnelling air through a confined area enhances cooling. Having just case airflow may not be as effective, as it provides little spot cooling.

In my experience, HD whine comes mostly from the bottom of the drive usually. I agree to this aswell, more noise comes from the underside than anywhere else. Sides + tops are pretty much sealed off. The bottom however has plenty of holes and tiny gaps where noise escapes. Placing the whole drive on...

Re: A relatively cool and powerful CPU: Pentium M
This CPU just cries out for a passive cooled (or otherwise very quiet) laptop implementation. The current Pentium M laptops are nowhere near as 'silent' as they could be, compared to their Mobile Pentium 4 brethren. Surely that depends on the laptop itself, as all different brands/model produce dif...

Also note it's unlikely to consume anywhere near 100W DC for the system you specified. Most of the numbers you specified are theorectical max. Any system is unlikely to utilise 100% of everything at the same time. Check this thread, http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=21&highlight=max+p...

Don't stress out over your temps. A general guidance is to keep your CPU below ~60oC. Obviously you got people in the forums who want to boast how cool their CPU runs. There are also so many variances with temperture sensor software, with some reporting higher or lower depending on which one you use...

According to the Processor Electrical Specification your CPU dissipates 52.8W typical, approximately the same as a Northwood P4 2.0A.
It does seem a little high, I would advice applying Arctic Silver 3 instead and also check the amount of airflow through your system. What are your ambient temps?
