Nice suggestion.
You got any idea what type of fan I should use? I don't want it to be too big. 8cm max probably but 6cm would be better. I need it to blow quite a bit of air so what fan will reliably start at 5v yet push out enough air. It doesn't have to be very quiet.

Looking for a quiet USB fan
Hello all, its been a while since I last posted. I'm looking for a quiet USB fan. I've tried a few but they were all very noisy... I think the problem is its small dimensions and the cheapy soft material used for its blade to avoid giving you a nice shave. Anyone found one or know of one that ...

Just an update about the noise. I done further noise testing and the fan is extremely quiet in low mode. You don't even notice its on... I usually stick my fingers near the vents to know its actually on (can feel the heat). Maybe the idle noise of the Hitachi drive is drowning out the sound of the f...

I didn't try it out before I bought it... I know, I know I should of done especially where noise is concerned but then again when you check it in shops its almost impossible to tell if its quiet because the ambient noise is quite loud so it wouldn't of been much use. I mainly bought it because of th...

ASUS V6VA should be quiet by SPCR standards
Hello all, I haven't posted here for ages mainly because I use a notebook and there isn't much you can do to quiet a notebook... Its best to find a quiet one to start with. :D I no longer have a desktop machine because of the resulting "SPCR sydrome" where it was never quiet enough, and tweaking for...

Here is what I think. Most heatsinks are designed for blowing, if it was designed for sucking it would work as effectively. Blowing air downwards onto a HS causes air to be recirculated and this reduces efficiency. If you have a back exhaust fan which is most likely the case, some of that recirculat...

I use the fan version to great effect on a thermalright SLK900, it greatly reduces vibrational noise... As for the PSU version it really depends if your PSU(+fan) causes enough vibrations to hear the difference. If the fan in your PSU has very little vibrations because of the quality and/or is spinn...

I have an IBM Travelstar 5k80 40GB drive (5400rpm, 8mb) and its super quiet. I would say from past listening it's a tad quieter than a Barracuda IV... It was way back though when I have played around with a Cuda IV. Compared to my DM+9 there is no match. It's quoted by IBM to be 2.1Bels idle and 2.6...

The biggest danger is that is can easilly fall down and hit your foot with a sharp corner. Perhaps the wires going into the computer is short enough to stop the fall, but then the yank in those cables is not what you really want. Hee hee, actually my PSU is stuck on with velcro. If you look at the ...

I'll second Wumpus on that one. The half dozen 92mm Zalman fans that I've gotten with their Flower heatsinks have all been awful. According to our SPCR reviewers, the Zalmau AlCu has "modest noise" and is listed second best. http://www.silentpcreview.com/article30-page1.html . I use one and I am ve...

Intel HSF is reasonably quiet at 5v and performs pretty well at this voltage. Check the old HS review and see how it compares. It is still a little whiny but I doubt you notice this noise in your system. Attach a Zalman fanmate to it and turn it down all the way down. It's thermally controlled but i...

Yes its absolutely true you can turn your Radeon 9500 into a 9700 and Radeon 9800SE into a 9800/9800 Pro! (depending on its original clock speed) Apparently the 9500 and 9800SE is the same card as its bigger brother but with 4 pipelines disabled and running at 128bits memory bandwidth instea...

ABAQUS, well done! Smart cookie! 8) You've done a great job and no you're not cheating. There are really no rules that govern how you go about quieting a system. Generally speaking we don't want to go over ~30dBA @ 1 meter (that is the only rule). Anything above this threshold is not classed as quie...

I think some of the real smart thinking with his solution was the controll of the airflow. A normal fan on a CPU heatsink stirs air around in the case producing lots of strange airflow. With his setup he has rather good controll over the airflow, so he is not reusing any air. He probably had to wor...

From Ralf's HS review (a very nice roundup of all the heavy weights) I would wait and go with the Zalman. It performs better than the SLK900... Update: Here's the roundup Since you overclock... 1...

Yeah, it does sound a little strange, but what sounds even stranger is your 16c ambient. Don't you find that a bit cold to live in? :) Maybe you have answered your own mystery. Your HSF no longer tips the fine balance of airflow. When you set the fan at a lower voltage, it could be pulling the natur...

Once you try LCD you will never go back to CRT. I second that! Now with many LCD panels offering <=16ms response times, I see no reason for using CRTs. Extremely smooth for video and games... I generally don't trust case temp sensors because it doesn’t tell you how warm the air is inside your case. Put a probe inside the case and you get completely different reading. What it does tell you is the temp wherever the sensor is located. This is more or less useless for any kind of purpose. A ...
