There is clear proof of EMFs effect on physiological processes whether or not one can extend the proof to actual symptoms. Of course. Sun burns, vision, X-rays and cancer, laser surgery, vitamin D. As with most things in medicine, it is a question of dose. (How much, what energy, ...) As far as non...

Here is an interesting article directly related to what is being discussed here. I'd be interested to hear from you and all the others here as to what they think of it. (They'd probably be interested in getting the teachers names/addresses so they could have them do some 'tests'.) School Solves Sta...

I keep trying to give you folks some idea of just how sensitive an individual I am but you just don't get it. Please consider that maybe we do "get it," but that there may not be standard answers that apply here. (Or at least the people in this forum may not have the standard answers.) I followed t...

Edit: This post was composed/sent before NoiseFreeGuy's post of 1:31 pm showed up here. It's funny, though a few have replied to this thread, no one has answered my initial question. Many have suggested doing tests, but that wasn't what I was asking about. How would people know the answers to questi...

Re: Cellphones...
I just activated my first ever cellphone this evening and simply by turning it on at home and going through the activation process I started to feel exactly the same sensations in my temples that I felt with the optical mice, only *10 times* as strong. Would anyone here know exactly what it was tha...

Suggest adding Emoticons - loud (and quiet)
Is it possible (without a lot of work) to add emoticons to the SPCR fora? Given our topic, I think one wearing hearing protectors (and possibly wincing because of loud noise) might be apropos/useful. Possibly also one symbolizing quiet (although I don't have an immediate idea of how to convey that -...

I've only listened to the Revo inside a Fry's store so the noise floor is pretty high. That isn't a noise floor - it's a ceiling. (at least if it is anything like the local Fry's) They should issue hearing protectors at the door, I always bring my own. SPCR should have a smiley that is wear...

Have you considered/compared the new MacMini? Uses about half the power on idle (<10watts) Has Core2Duo processor (so better performance than Atom processors). Not fanless. Hard drive rather than SSD. May cost a bit more. (I have no experience with either one - but have been shopping/looking at spec...

Actually now (as compared to in Edison's day) it is reasonably easy to convert DC to DC. There are DC to DC power supplies (like the PicoPSU for computers), and various circuits/ICs/etc. that do the job. (e.g., Look up DC to DC converter, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC_to_DC_converter or Charge Pum...

You might want to try to figure out (if you haven't already) what is using how much of the power in your system. Your idle power seems pretty high (assuming that is with most of the drives spun down). This thread http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=54314&postdays=0&postorder=asc&sta...

You might find it interesting to read some about the history of electricity distribution, e.g. the competition between DC and AC transmission (Edisson vs. Westinghouse & Tesla) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_Currents (Used to use DC - but AC won out because, with the technology then available, ...

Followup/expansion on my previous post (I was called away before really finished it). 65watts sounds high for an idle power, so I assume you mean this is some combination of idle and under load power. Might be easier to suggest alternatives if know separate items (idle power, load power, time spent ...

"65W average" - what does it use at idle? How much of the time is it idle (vs. active). How about using Wake on LAN (and timed wake up if using it to record media) so you can turn it off most of the time? How much longer will it serve your needs? (i.e. if you upgrade it with expansion board, how man...

Alternatives to MacMini for energy efficiency
What other machines compete with the Mac Mini in low idle power while providing enough processing power to handle routine work for reasonable future-proofness? (e.g. <10w idle power, but Core2Duo 2.4GHz+ - so reasonable computing power ) http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=59147&hig...

Interesting. On the same page I notice they have a bunch of surge protectors that are supposed to save power by turning off other devices when a master device is off, or give you a wireless remote control for the surge strip. These might be convenient devices, but "greenness" is questionable at best...

5400RPM - quieter, may use less power (so may be cooler). (e.g. Samsung F3EG HD105SI EcoGreen) The 500GB EG uses only 1 platter, not sure if quieter/lower power/etc. than 1TB F3EG. Optical sensors, by definition do not have anything to do with electromagnetic forces. Wireless mice use radio frequencies, which are quite different from electromagnetic forces. A wired optical tracking mouse would seem to be the solution to totally avoid EMF. A little off topic - but optical sens...

Thoughts that occur: Use an old laptop. (e.g. keep a 486 out of the landfill, no hard disk, turn off screen to conserve power) Use an old router, running **-WRT firmware (if don't want to flash your main router, get a second one to act as your wakeup server). A bit more involved - repurpose a print ...

Couple of notes on the APC. I have been content with APC UPS units (had couple of circa 300-350 watt ones that kept my computer from glitching when brownout for several years.) A few caveats: The old ones gave no indication when the battery was worn out (on top of that, once the battery died - they ...
