I noticed this too

A few years ago I noticed a humming noise when I use the mousewheel. I found an article talking about the problem. The noise was actually coming from the drive as Windows was saving/loading the "screenshot" of the current image (3 pixels up/down) from the temp file. I can make the hum happen at will...

Nice

So, that's how you suspend a drive in the Lanboy case. I didn't think it could be done with such a narrow space.

Seriously consider the stock fan that AMD gives you

I was quite surprised at how small and quiet the HSF that comes with the AMD 64 is. It uses a low profile fan and its speed is controlled by the whole Cool and Quiet system. Mine is very, very quiet. But, its always running in the lowest setting. Having a cramped and hot case like yours might have i...

I'd take SmartDrive over suspension

I tried SmartDrive and it was great. My only problem was that my drive heated up to 60C+. I think its probably on par, or equal, to suspension. Plus, it's a lot more compact.

You did exactly what I did

Last weekend I replaced my Seagate ST380011A (IDE) with the SP2504C (SATA). When the SP2504C is sitting there (not seeking), its alot more quiet than the Seagate. But, when the Samsung is seeking, its very noisy . I set the Samsung accoustic mode to quiet and it made the seek noise a little more tol...

Whoa. You're just as cheap as me

I got a similar setup last year. Its nice that the mobo has no chipset fans, etc. But, the only thing that troubles me is the 120 mm (?) fan on your powersupply. That could be noisy. Guess you can always replace it with a quiet Nexus fan if the stock one is loud. I was very surprised at how quiet th...

Cool

Wow. Smooth scrolling was the cause of the noise! I guess IE has to render the webpage a pixel at a time as you scroll around. Why it doesn't do that in RAM, I dunno. As for Rei's original question: does it sound like your noises are coming from the drive reading/writing really quickly as you minimi...

Whoa. I get the same thing

When I'm in IE and I use the scrollwheel to move a page up or down, I hear a buzzing noise too. It sounds like IE is reading from the disk for every notch that I scroll on the wheel! Yet, when I open another application (like Vis Studio with a lot of pages) and scroll with the wheel, I don't hear it...

Go orange

I used to be a Panaflo purist. Nowadays, I just use Nexus as it's quiet, easy to get and around the same price.

I always found Panaflos hard to get. But, I was always impressed with their noise levels. If you can easily get a Panaflo or a Nexus, pick the cheaper one.

Wow. I had the same choice a few weeks ago

I setup a budget AMD 3000 machine and had a choice between the the Ninja heatsink and more RAM. I finally decided to get 2 sticks of 512 MB RAM over the heatsink. I decided to try the stock AMD heatsink and upgrade when I had more cash. Thank god I didn't buy the Ninja over more RAM. Surprisingly, t...

Just try the old fry the board solution

The simple solution: take one of the PSU power cables, put some paperclips in the 12v and ground and then start touching them on the mobo. Makes it all ready for warranty repair..

Then the reseller can do a warranty on it and you can upgrade at the same time.

Problem all solved

You need that "Fun with Knots" book

I had the same problem years ago, check out this page:

I usually just make a million knots until it stops slipping, but there are correct knots you can use.

I'm as cheap as you are

I took a $29 clone case and just replaced the powersupply fan with a Panaflo. (It didn't have the 2 fan setup like good PSUs have) Then, I put another 80mm Panaflo on a cheap 80mm CPU heatsink and everything was much quieter. I did splurge by buying Zalman fan power adjusters but that's it. The chea...

Sounds like my problem from a few years ago

I wanted to play it cheap and not have to replace the entire heatsink on a P3 system. The only problem was that it was using a 60mm (or was it 70?) fan. I did a special order and found a Panaflo that small. Nowadays, I'd just buy a 60-80mm adaptor and put a Panaflo 80mm on it. That 60/70mm Panaflo f...

This is where sleep mode falls short

Idealy, when the PC goes into sleep mode, it should slow down and stop its fans. Considering how hot modern CPUs run, this is no longer a good idea. Even if the fans did slow down in sleep mode, your problem is that you just want the monitor and vid card to turn off while you the PC does P2P stuff. ...

It sounds real good in the textbook but it usually winds up screwing you in the end. I often found myself filling up 1 of the partitions and then having to resize them. I've never cleaned dust off of my mobo. Is there any possibility of damage? I can see it clogging up a fan or drive, but isn't the circuit board relatively idiot proof?

Call up your local HVAC guy and ask him where you can get some of that instant smoke that they use to check for vent leaks. You squeeze the container and it produces immediate smoke.

Sounds like what you're looking for.

Ensure that your DriveImage/Ghost supports XP partitions

What you need to do is to clone your old drive to the new one. The catch is that the older versions of imaging software don't know how to handle the partition changes made by XP. I think it was Ghost v7.5 that was the first to recognize the XP changes. After getting an XP partition compatible versio...

It's all theoretical..

What could happen is that you have a boot sector/partition table/etc on the disk that has somehow had invalid data put onto it. For example, remember that QuickTax ( ? ) program that put some bytes onto unused parts of the boot sector a few years ago. Now, if you just installed Windows onto that dri...

Just delete the partitions when you setup XP

When you're in the XP setup, simply delete all the partitions and create a new one. Don't waste time zeroing the drive as its really not necessary.

If you wanna be a purist, you can write over every sector of the drive but it's more of a time waster..
