Asus Terminator C3 Review and Questions
Low Power Headless Server Bit the bullet and bought myself the asus from newegg for ~$100 total with shipping and tax. I was very unhappy with how noisy the machine was when I first started it up. I powered it on with only the stock case fan and the really tiny cpu fan. The noise was loud, buzzy, a...

Ah, my fault for not reading closely enough. In section 4.1 of the manual, they say the board dimensions are 23 x 23 (micro-atx), and not 17cm x 17cm (VIA's mini-itx specifications) I agree with the small = _not_ cheap comment. Terminator's high on my list now since it offers much more than the slug...

I actually built a P3 box and tried running it in my room. Unfortunately, I really do need the small size because one tower is already too much. With a small enough box, I could put it in a corner under my desk. I'd probably raze all the parts from the P3 box for whatever I build. Good point about s...

Wow! This sounds like a great deal. Do you have any experience with the noise qualities of the power supply and case? Also do you know the size of the case? One their site, they claim it is: "only 60% size of normal micro-ATX towers". Does this mean it's uses a mini-itx motherboard in case I want to...

For a file server, the Slug is pretty awesome. It draws something like 2.5 watts (plus whatever the disk(s) get from the wall) and is No Fan (tm) silent. You would need a USB enclosure though, and it's not trivial to get these silent. Very quiet is more reasonable, though silencing a drive while pr...

Low power headless server
I like my setup so far for computers: - iBook G4 for classes and mobile computing. (quiet and low power) - Custom 1.6Ghz P4 desktop with 90mm undervolted fan and air ducts (quiet enough and not too much power because it's on only when I use it) But the one niche I haven't been able to fill is a home...

Wow, this sounds perfect! I plan to do this without having a switch and just setting it to 5V permanently. One thing still bothers me: Caution! There are people, who will say "You can't feed current back into your power-supply" and they are right! If you plug something between the 12V and 5V lead, y...

Quieting normal 4-pin fans?
Hey all, I started working on a cheap solution to quiet up my computer. All was going well and I have this dense foam all inside a $5 Antec SLK1600. This is my first attempt, so it's probably not as detailed or scientific as I hope. So I headed over to endpcnoise and went to the surplus section and ...

Remember the Cube?
I'm glad Apple finally goes back to its root of a simple and affordable desktop. I really look foward to checking one out and seeing how well it performs acoustically. Best of all, Mac mini purrs along at a whisper-quiet sound level, so there’s no reason to hide it under your desk like an old PC to ...

Though the specs seem low for something that costs well over a grand, one has to keep in mind the reduced form factor and gorgeous displays. Kudos to Apple for coming out with a PC with style, ergonomics, and functionality. Games are better on a PC IMHO (don't flame please), at least for the same pr...

12" ibook g4
I've been looking into buying a laptop with about the same reasons. No games, mostly web, word processing and some programming. The new ibook has been on the top of my list. It's definately a good price with good battery life and it runs cool. I haven't been in a quiet room with one yet, but from wh...

i'm going to play with the cardboard box idea as soon as I get some free time, and collect some materials. Thanks koody I'm probably going to lean towards an even simpler idea and just drop the tower in one box, and then dropping that box into another box filled with insulating material. As for opti...

Yea, now the fiberglass sounds dangerous and not worth the effort. Thanks for all the replies! I think I'm going to try to find some eggshell foam material, and other packaging material, and drop my entire tower into it's original box, and fill the box with the materials. Hopefully, thermal issues w...

Using Fiberglass?
I don't know much about the properties of fiberglass, but I have these huge rolls of cloth fiberglass lying in the garage. Anyone know or can think of a way that this could help silence my computer?

How much power does each peripheral consume?
Many sites suggest that the VIA motherboards do not consume a lot of power, but what if more peripherals are added into the system? Are there any charts or sites which reference how much power each peripheral consumes because I would love to get that 60watt PSU that's fanless but I'm worried I would...

PSU for micro/mini- itx
I'm sorry if this has already been posted, but when I searched on google, I had a very tough time finding a PSU that would work for a tiny PC like those mini VIAs and fit in one of those tiny cube cases. So has anyone found a mini/micro PSU that's quiet? I'd imagine I wouldn't need more than 230 watt

What measurements?
Here's the quick and dirty: Can anyone give a quick concise guide to how the following are measured, and a brief description on each? noise levels CPU voltages PSU ?? how to measure how much power a system consumes.... I figured since i want such a specific system, I might as well have a power consc...

I would really love a silent system, and I thought the sand bagging the HD idea was very clever and original, but I do have to agree that it does look very ugly, and take up a large amount of room. If I go with that idea, then I'd definately have to chuck out the idea of having a small mini-itx comp...

Are you serious w/ the sandbags? And i think that the 5400 rpm drive would be a wonderful idea since i don't expect crazy performance from the system. It'd be perfect, and i didn't even think of it. Still i think it'd be nice to be able to power down the server if i got real nit picky about the nois...

Well, the weather is a little better here, but i must agree that it would be next to impossible to have a 24/7 server running unless i had a huge backup battery to store the energy i collect. And an update: I didn't know this was possible, but i guess some weaker PSU's can actually be fanless! yea! ...

Perfect Noiseless Solution
After spending some time crawling the web, and reading up the subject, I think I've found a pretty decent solution to my noise problem for computer that'd be perfect for a server/multimedia center: Here's what makes noise: Hard drives, PSU, fans, monitors(CRT) Unfortunately, this solution can't work...

I really miss my debian box which was on my old computer, so when i plan on getting this silent always on VIA box i was hoping to put the linux back on Are their any compatibility issues with the motherboard, processor, and all the on-board add-ins and OS? Also on a side-note does anyone recommend a...
