Re: OOPS! 6850 -> 5850 and Power Supply/AMP concerns
Yup, I'm going to leave it as it is as well. Still surprising that its capable of doing eyefinity gaming

Re: OOPS! 6850 -> 5850 and Power Supply/AMP concerns
Running great the past few days. Temperatures are higher in the case than before (more power out of the GPU, and now a fanless PSU). I am considering going back to the 120mm equipped seasonic 430 I was using before (RMA'd due to a fan issue) to increase negative air pressure in order to reduce case ...

Re: OOPS! 6850 -> 5850 and Power Supply/AMP concerns
Seriously, the X-650 is cheaper compared to two of those models. Curious, have you measured actual power consumption? I don't have access to any power draw equipment so I tried to estimate using various online PSU sizing calculators. So far no random restarts or artifacting and I ran furmark for ab...

OOPS! 6850 -> 5850 and Power Supply/AMP concerns
To sum up, went and got a 3rd monitor for cheap which precipitated buying an eyefinity card. Originally targetted a 6850 but it turns out the chipset doesn't play well with my specific setup (image tearing in windows desktop on multiple make/models and driver versions). After excercising my credit I...

I've also heard of some instability if using remote desktop protocol to remotely connect to the folding box and can confirm that happens too. It shuts down the core - probably due to the unconventional rerouting of video data. The core will shut down after completing a project and will not restart u...

Yup, just got it running today too - approximately 25 secs / % on a 9600GT for project 5002. PPD is approximately 3500!!!?? GPU temp is fluctuating between 51-53C with a passive S2 cooler. CPU is back to running a single standard client, pretty poor showing of 387PPD compared to the 1920 I was getti...

Did the swap, current ambient is approximately 25C, or 77F. GPU is idling at 40. The cores are 25 and 27 idle and 40 and 41C while folding. Basically the same as they were before. The GPU now idles about 4 degrees higher though - probably less pressure from the cpu fan pulling in a smaller volume of...

Also vouch for the ECS 9600. At $125 from newegg its a great buy. I have mine at the bottom of my Solo with the two adjacent pci slot covers removed. Airflow is provided by an S-flex 800 exhast fan and the 120mm PSU intake which suck in air and blow them over the S2's fins. Temps idle around 36C and...

ppft - no, its not bad. Sites like this make it easier to figure out what you need right up front and stores like newegg make it easy to get too. Compile while at work, use RDP to connect back to your home system to check up on it :) I have about 10 fans lying around. They've built up over 10 years ...

You'd be surprised how fast ram gets eaten by multiple virtual machines to practice for exams. Even without VM running, I've watched how the memory / pages per second and page fault counters runs on the system. There are still hard page faults that happen with 4gb (3.5 recognized) and low utilization.

I've been running one of these for about a week with a bolt through kit, nexus PWM fan and AS3 (yes, 3). Its been pretty good. My E8400 will hit 44C when gaming, folding, and monitoring temps. But when its just folding it never breaks 40C. The nexus PWM fan runs between 1100-1350rpm bios controlled....

Since you mentioned it, I checked out what would happen acoustically if I stopped the CPU fan. It *is* the loudest of the quiet components in the system but not attention getting - definitely a broadband type of noise. And by loudest, I mean its drowned out by things like A/C in the living room runn...

I've had the CPU fan running as low as 400rpm for an extended period (overnight while folding). Temps were similar, probably 2-3 degrees higher per core while folding. I've never had it completely off though. The xigmatech is an excellent low airflow cooler. I let the bios control the speed because ...

Quiet from the GetGo
5 years ago it was impossible to make stuff quiet with off the shelf stuff (I had a thread back in 2003 on page like 35 of the gallery on spcr, no more pictures though :( ... in 2008, 3 days and Newegg shows up my doorstep with this: Gigabyte's EP35-DSR3 Antec Solo Intel E8400 Xigamtech 1253 cooler ...

I have that exact same case - not modded though. Its hardly silent as the door has always rattled when a CD is in the drive and I think the side of the case vibrates too without using a CD. Anyway: You might want to look at something like a Thermalright SI-128, which is designed so that a fan blows ...

Apparantly, the cooler's been making rounds in the US for a bit of time! OCForums has a thread on it with the TR-775 bolt thru kit, check out this photo: http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii305/thawaxshop/Comp%20Builds/DSCI0014.jpg About the orientation, on page 3 someone eluded that it could go in...

Time to upgrade?
Long time member at SPCR, so glad to see its still alive and well when I come and decide to upgrade - loved this site when I was first modifying for a quiet system in 2003. I was thinking purchasing the following come January '08: Antec Solo Seasonic S12 II 330 Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L Intel E6550 Therm...

I just replaced the Seagate Momentus in my laptop with a Fujitsu 60GB MHT-AH 5400RPM drive. The Seagate clicked and ticked a lot even when the system was idling. The fujitsu, on the other hand, had a light hum and was very steady when operating. I'm glad I switched out especially with the +20GB in s...
