sorry to be cynical, but i think psu manufacturers would rather not bother. The average user wouldnt want to deal with fuses, RMAs would increase, people would put in fuses of the wrong value etc.

It's still a good idea.

Absolutely agree Mike, enthusiasts who do upgrade regularly are reporting great results with 64 bit athlons. My point is that if you don't upgrade more than once a year, we're going to see some major developments with the 64 bit mobos, with PCI express coming in and possibly BTX. Things are about to...

Personally i think you might as well splash out on a dvdrw - not much price difference and you KNOW you'l want one eventually

Secondly, I'd downgrade that psu to a 350 or a 300, cos 400 isnt needed even when clocking tbh.

Personally i dont upgrade regularly - i think buying 64bit at the moment is jumping on the bandwagon early and as such you'll be forced to upgrade later. Secondly, perhaps you'd be better off with 1Gb of somewhat more budget pc3200 ram, a lot of apps and games like the gig nowadays. Thirdly, if you ...

I'm surprised silent computing is a concern in Finland, everyone is cranking up their metal music over there anyway ;) Well, let me put it this way: there are two groups, one of which lives heart and soul for heavy metal and is mainly responsible for all the cranking up. The members of the other gr...

i knew somebody would mention the sub GHz issue! I should never have mentioned the frequencies i was working at, but as soon as frquencies start to get above a few thousand cycles, surface transmission becomes apparent. I believe IDE cables run at MHz speeds, which is certianly enough to see field m...

Well, it's upsetting my audio amp, it's a yamaha one. I plugged in my bass amp, which needs it's cap replacing cos it picks up every bit of noise there is (just for testing) and discovered that the hard drives arent the only culprit. I ran 3dmark03 and noticed a ticking, roughly equal in frequency t...

PSU injecting noise into my mains

Quite simply, when my pc is idling i get quite a lot of noise coming through, i'm pretty sure it's caused by my hard drives. But, in my eyes replacing the drives would be a workaround, not a solution. So, would a power conditioner be enough to isolate the power supply from the mains or do i need a f...

there arent any decent, quiet aftermarket video coolers that will fit in a shuttle. You can get a decent fast gaming rig, but you wont be able to max out an overclocks and keep it quiet.

only very sharp bends cause errors, as long as the curve takes place over a couple of millimetres, that'll be fine. Can you explain your reasoning behind this? Unless you actually crease it so hard you break the wire, that doesn't make sense. It's a bit of a weird one so i'll give you some backgrou...

I've always though the best way to make a psu, although big, would be to use overrated torioidal transformers for each line and normal voltage regulators etc, just like a traditonal power supply. You'd never worry about rails dropping, and with the isolation and muffling techniques already used for ...

hehe, i hadnt thought of the lighting issue.

Well, i still intend to decouple the pane from the case surround, just to stop any unnecessary resonance.

Good to know i wasn't the first to think of it.

Double Glazed case window?

Silly concept i know, adds weight, but i may try it seeing as i have 2mm perspex. Say a 4mm air gap, caulking and double sided foam tape to seperate them. I may even try and totally airseal it and gas fill it. Another concept would be to seperate them with old rubber, like from bike inner tubes, and...

i think the 3200+ is a bit of a waste of money. With that motherboard a molbile cpu is an obvious option, will easily reach 3200 speeds or could be clocked down hard for silence.

tibors - how do you define blocking sound? refelcting it elsewhere?

absorbtion and diffusion surely are the goals, to minimise sound transmitted through the panel.

What if the diameter of the holes were smaller than the thickness of the material? Then they would increse surface area.

And hasnt turbulent airflow been shown to be better for cooling?

these are innocent questions btw, i'm not trying to flamebait or push facts that arent true.

it's more scientific than you think - proteins in the average human finger get damaged at about 50 degrees, and as such cause pain.

So, if you can comfortably keep a hand on anything, it's usually below 50 degrees celcius.

yer course it'll help. More important to get it in the middle of the panels than at the edges, that'll help break up and absorb the sound most.

I remember reading once when building speaker boxes that a fair amount of noise comes off of the sharp corners of a speaker. Has anyone tried reversing the rear 80mm fan?

silly question i know, but has anyone done any objective testing on this? i accidently put mine in backwards so it blew air into the psu and it seems to work absolutely fine. Obviously in an unducted case this would be a major issue.

I've been trying to think of a way to way to maake heatpipes - so far the best thing i've thought of is to ssolder a cap on one end of a copper tube and a valve on the other, then fill with whatever refrigerant. It may not be the most elegant solution, but it's the most viable i can think of for hom...
