IMO if you are experienced with VGA coolers, then you could try applying a better thermal paste, maybe Arctic MX-3. The stock cooler *should* cool it, even if noisy. If the thermal / stability results are the same, then return the card. Hopefully your tampering with the card won't be detectable. I ...

Aftermarket cooler on HD 5870 PCS+ or return card?
I need some quick opinions here... I recently got an "open box" PowerColor HD 5870 PCS+ on eBay. It did not seem to be tampered with or damaged. The deal was good, and I doubt I'd find a reference 5870 for much cheaper. As I mentioned in another HD5870 thread, I was not impressed... The card seems t...

Thought I'd share my thoughts on the HD 5870 PCS+: It sucks. I just received it the other day and have been playing around with the fan using MSI Afterburner (thanks for the advice, whoever mentioned it higher in this thread). When the fan is under 50%, and especially under 40%, it's a fairly quiet ...

I think the 1tb ones are probably 3-platter, which is which they are thicker than normal and only available as external usb drives. Just a quick note - there are 1Tb / 5200RPM drives sold separately. The one from WD is WD10TPVT (and WD10TEVT, which I think they phased out before really selling it i...

Shin-Etsu X23-7783D?
I noticed a couple people mentioning Indigo Xtreme as the ultimate TIM. Now, I'm not a fan of such fancy stuff and 6-page instructions for application, so I probably want to just stick with standard-style thermal grease. But when reading these two ( link1 , link2 ) thermal grease reviews from Skinne...

Both gone: X5560's
I have 2 ES Intel Xeon X5560 processors (LGA1366, 2.8GHz) that I got in a batch of other Xeons. They have the spec # stamped on, and do not have the longer Intel code etched on the heatspreader, so they're presumably pretty early test processors. These particular ones did not POST on my Tyan S7025. ...

Managing i7 CPU's (1156/Lynnfield) in Windows
I'm putting together an HTPC/NAS/gaming-ish PC with an i7-875K processor. So far, I have not bought a motherboard, but it has to be mATX, with a PCIe x16 slot and one or two more usable PCIe x1/x4 slots (that can fit standard width cards, along with a double-width vid card in the x16 slot). Given th...

There's a kind of parallel with acoustic noise and visual noise -- most people here are not interested in LED fans. Well put. I've got black electrical tape on annoyingly bright LED's in my iPhone "dock," my amp's power light, the hard-drive activity indicator or some such thing in one case, and a ...

First of all, one card/fan is better than two, when it comes to noise, power, and generated heat. Thus, my vote is on the HD5850. I would say that Sapphire's Vapor-X series and Powercolor's PCS+ are decent ways to go, if you won't want to change the cooler. As far as aftermarket cooling, an Accelero...

Netflix? Umm... and what about TV? At least with Netflix, you have to actively choose what you're watching; I don't think there's even a "playlist" feature for movies (yet). With TV, a lot of people just tune in to a channel and watch whatever is given to them, or at the very least keep browsing the...

Thanks for looking! Note that I might also selling this stuff on Anandtech and Arstechnica, so don't be surprised if you see it there. Some of my forum feedback: heatware , beerology , head-fi . I accept PayPal, or contact me for other methods. "Shipped" means within the US, most likely with USPS Pr...

Let me know when you intend to sell it. Is it still in its shipping case? Probably not for a while. I have the original shipping box, but I've used the case, and have modified it to fit a big VGA heatsink, at the price of getting rid of the standard HDD mounting mechanism and only allowing mounting...

Much much much nicer than the Antec NSK1380. It's dimensions are: 14.69" x 10.98" x 10.31" I actually have one of those and will probably get around to selling it eventually. :) Actually, I don't particularly like the design, and it is a pretty huge case. To clarify, I like Antec and I like the NSK...

mATX case to use with PicoPSU (NSK1380 alternatives?)
I've been playing around with the idea of getting a powerful HTPC/home-server/light-gaming machine for a while now. And soon, I'll quite likely be getting a PicoPSU kit from ryboto that has a 6-pin graphics card connector (or two) from the power brick, which would therefore allow a fairly powerful s...
