I'm not aware of any bigger heatsinks that have the chipset attachment method (hooks). What heatsink are you thinking of, and are you going to make your own attachment mechanism? Maybe the Noctua or Nexus chipset heatsinks? Both of them come with hardware for multiple attachment schemes, including ...

(UK) Review Posted
It's not terribly informative compared to the reviews on this site, but it's a sign that they're on their way to the Western Hemisphere. Hopefully, they'll provide competition for the 38mm Scythe Fans and work well in applications like internal hard drive enclosures. http://www.xsreviews.co.uk/revie...

Re: cool MATX mobo selection
I really like the E2140/2160's. I think they're a great value and a solid file server CPU. As far as I know, the only difference is clock/binning. My E2140 server currently reports CPU0/CPU1 @ +27°C, using a Zerotherm BTF95 with no fan (reported with /usr/bin/sensors, OpenSUSE 10.3). Here's my rank...

Which is more plaid? Spain or Albatross?
This has all been said much better by others, but here goes... Thumbs up for the 182: The Antec will be much quieter out of the box, period. Any comparable Lian-Li product will need quite a bit more effort to get it close to the Antec case in terms of acoustics. Thumbs up for the B25: It's been my e...

Re: Intel Allendale 2.2GHz 775 & Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU
I am building a boring yet stable new machine for my girlfriend and I noticed that the Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU that is in her current system can be used with a 775 if you buy an extra inexpensive part to make it fit. This could save me from $30 to $50 so I'm interested to hear if others think the Zal...

As of a couple of weeks ago, (release) kernel support is still iffy for both the controllers on the Intel Q35 and Intel G33 boards- I'd lean toward an older ICHR7 or ICH8 board. (NCQ - AHCI features are supported.) Even with software RAID, you'll probably never even come close to maxing out the 2160...

since unraid is based on linux will speed step still work, i.e. is it only bios based? going by the numbers in the link above, i am leaning towards the E2140. There's tons of decent ways to address EIST from the userspace and the kernel, so yes, speedstep works. With all the distros I've seen, you ...

My Experience with Lian-Li EX-34 Racks
I'm using the EX-34's in a PC-A16, which I'm using for the sake of airflow, not silence. I'm also using Seagate ES series drives, for the sake of reliability, not silence. Overall, my setup does a good job at keeping the drives cool. (12 drives in 3 racks ~ 32C.), but silence is probably the last th...

Clarification on price
The price listed in the topic is if you're lucky enough to get them to honor the mail-in rebate. The actual price is $85.00, not including the $35 you'll spend on an RMA, and the $50 you'll spend replacing it after giving up on ever seeing your defective unit returned. If you factor those, in, it'll...

I don't know what's wrong with me, but I've found no problems applying any brand of thermal paste, and for the most part, it never seems to make any difference in thermal transfer. Then again, I never could see the difference the $200 monster video cables and the $4 double extra happy dragon brand. :)

Heatsink design- the fins
What I don't get... Why don't they mimic biological systems and put in as many bumps and squiggles on the fins as possible, in order to increase the surface area? That would reduce the need for 1kg chunks of case filling metal, cooled by Pratt and Whitney Turbofans. Some possible answers: 1) Lack of...

I'm using the NMT2 (server ~35C case temp) and NMT3 (workstation ~30 C case temp), and both of them work quite well for balancing noise and cooling. It would be easier to diagnose the problem if you could post some diagnostic data. Try these, in order, on the command line: 1) ipconfig /all 2) netstat -nr 3) ping -n 5 "IPv4 address of wlan card" (e.g. ping -n 5 192.168.1.7 - you get this from the results of 1) 4) ping -n 5 "IPv4 address of router...

Thanks again for sharing. That's so ridiculously simple, it ought to be emulated.

God knows these are tempting to use, but don't- you have a decent chance at blocking an emergency communication or interfering with public transportation.
