FreeNAS
Does the OS absolutely have to be Linux? If not, give FreeNAS a look- its FreeBSD based, but not that hard to get used to if you've poked around any Unix work-a-like before. Even if that's not true, you can do the vast majority of admin tasks via a web interface. There are some benefits to using it ...

wow that is quite a study. what i understood with a quick glance is that the more surface area the better, and copper cores really help. That makes intuitive sense, but intuition doesn't always work out in practice. I'm not sure that the paper supports any specific conclusions about a particular de...

As previously posted, the "routers" mentioned are actually general purpose computing devices with a full blown operating system working behind the scenes (stored in firmware). Go Boring!
For a home file server CPU, think low end, even with software RAID. I'd guess that the network will be the bottleneck, not the server itself. The Celeron 430 or a 45W Sparta should be perfect- find a decent motherboard with a boring yet reliable chipset, and choose the processor last. If I was putti...

The only thing I'd add that hasn't been mentioned previously is you might want to consider a faster, distinct, drive for scratch files when using Photoshop. CFD Modeling of Forced Cooling of Computer Chassis
I'm not sure where to put this, so please mod triage away. My abridged version: Modeling heat flow in computer chassis is hard because of the complexity of the flow and the low density of sampling for parameters like temperature. Recent surges in consumer level computational power and the availabili...

I was wondering if you were to build a slim case HTPC based on the DG45FC, what HSF will you use for the CPU? While there are low profile AM2 HSFs that make it possible to put a mini-itx/mATX AM2 based board in a slim HTPC case, I don't see much offerings for the Intel 775 CPU. It looks like the Sw...

Well, I was dead wrong when I opined that no one would ever come out with a DTX form factor board.
Just nine short months later, a manufacturer has released finally a DTX mobo, with an Intel, not an AMD CPU.

If it was my build, I'd look into an ICHR9 based board from GigaByte , stick an E2140 into it.
