Re: Home theater PC without a keyboard
Should be working now. The space limit on the server for uploading images has been doubled. I changed the original title, "Home theater PC without a keyboard", for obvious reasons. Rebellious, feel free to start a new thread with that heading. What's the limit? I've never uploaded anything before, ...

Re: Haswell comes to NUC
PSU made by Gigabyte, interesting. Maybe it's time to review PicoPSU. I posted about the 150XT kit a while back and I'm still curious if these devices need a ground connection.

Re: Beating the PS3
I tried the PicoPSU 150XT kit with a more power-hungry AM3 Phenom II system and there is some whine at high load. It appears to come from the power brick.

Re: Beating the PS3
So it's really NOT grounded! What's the solution? Plug a regular power cord into the mains and connect the ground wire to the chassis? The i5 3570K idles at 18W both Windows & Linux (with the optimized Intel video driver which is built into the kernel). It runs full screen Adobe flash with ~5% CPU u...

Re: Beating the PS3
Ha! Are you the johannes that posted amdmsrtweaker-lnx in xtremesystems? Anyway, I've installed the PicoPSU 150XT kit, seems stable even with the i5 3570K clocked to 4.4GHz, S3 is good, and no coil whine. My only concern is whether the mobo/chassis are properly grounded. The 12V power connector has ...

Re: Beating the PS3
BTW, I have a PcioPSU 150-XT and an Asus P8Z77-I DELUXE/WD, but haven't tested yet. I will sometime next week, and will listen for any coil whine. I have a hard time believing that Pico is equivalent to a $120 ATX PSU, and to trust that it's equally stable, especially during S3.

Re: Beating the PS3
Please ask if you need more detailed measurements or photos for the PicoPSU. I don't think the PicoPSU creates much EMI - all it does is to forward 12V signals and convert 3.3V and 5V signals from the 12V signal. Changing frequencies or voltage is actually much simpler than I thought. You "just" ha...

Re: Beating the PS3
Thank you. Yeah the PicoPSU would be a tight fit with adjacent RAM sticks. I don't even know if memory modules are susceptible to EMI interference (from the PicoPSU). AmdMsrTweaker was just updated to support Trinity and Richland, so perfect timing on your part. There's nothing for Linux yet, k10ctl...

Re: Beating the PS3
Isn't paper cardboard a fire hazard? This PicoPSU has some bulky hardware on the large plug that goes into the 24-pin power connector. Most Mini-ITX mobos have the memory slots right next to the 24-pin connector, but not yours. So it looks like the PicoPSU capacitors might touch the memory modules o...

Aluminum foil wrapper for laptop hard disk?
The 2.5" disk in my Samsung laptop comes wrapped in an aluminum foil envelope. There is also a piece of aluminum over the memory modules. I replaced the disk with an OCZ Vertex SSD, but I didn’t reuse the aluminum pocket because the SSD seems to have an aluminum case of it’s own. What is the purpose...

Is that foamy stuff blown-in to fill empty spaces, or just stuffed-in? It looks like Sealed Air's Instapak product. The foam is created when 2 chemicals are mixed together. The custom fit is achieved by putting the bag in place and closing the container while the foam is still expanding. Here's a v...

Good catch on the buzzing noise Mike. You are already getting hand-picked samples that are not representative of what customers get, so it's only fair to report the problem. You've given seasonic good reviews over the years, so people may get the impression it's just subtle advertising. I still want...

What is the improvement over the prolimatech mk-13? The mk-13 is much more versatile, mounts the fans to the case and you can use the same fan bracket to support the GPU/cooler assembly, so it has no droopies.

Re: Crucial M4 64GB: Solid-State on a Budget
I'm booting my OS from a 16GB Transcend flash drive that I bought for about $20. It's an SDHC UHS-I card running at about 50-70MB/sec on USB3. Supposedly these drives wear out, but I've never seen it happen yet. I can take them with me and boot Linux off any machine -- portability. So it must be a h...

TIM alone cannot account for 12C temp reduction, there's something else at play here. I've seen TIM product comparisons and the difference is about 1 degree.

Re: How to stop hard disk clicking in Windows
If you're running any software (eg, SpeedFan, AIDA) that monitors the disk temperature (via SMART), it will spin up the disks even when they are idle. I tried several times to get XP to spin down my idle disks, and eventually gave up. In my situation, it was best to let them spin all the time. Than...

How to stop hard disk clicking in Windows
I have several new 2.5" 500GB Hitachi HTS725050A7E630 and HTS727550A9E364. They make the "clink" parking noise, in XP they do it constantly, in Win7 less so but it's still very annoying. In Linux they don't do it at all . Something in the Windows OS keeps accessing the disks even when they're idle, ...
