can i still trust my phantom?

Beginning of this week my psu (seemingly) and mainbord died. A little while ago i just did the final test and it powered a 12cm fan again it failed to power a few days ago. The phantom 350 was hot when i got it out of the computer and i waited several hours for it to return to ambient temperature to...

It could be that a thermal overheat is very slow to reset(i tried it hours later when it seemed to have ambient temperature), because i was rounding up things for an RMA and the phantom has been powering my fans for about 5 minutes now. Might build it in again, but i'll sleep a night on it.

My phantom may have died after a little less than a year, it is a 2005 model and it was a bit hot when i checked it. I had hoped it was just the thermal overprotection, but sofar it doesn't look like it (the outside is now cold). Unfortunately some other hardware died as well, not sure what the exte...

My '05 phantom is still alive after 7 months, it's inside my case, doesn't have a dedicated fan. Works fine, i'm happy with it.

My phantom does get hot sometimes, but i intend to move a fan in the near future to improve airflow. The psu has been very stable. (although i don't stress it often)

When i first mounted the thing i could slightly move it, it is attached properly judging the temperature of the heatsink. I had a temperature probe(a box and a "stick" with two metal points at the end) a few days ago(loaned). The heatsink was just under 60 degrees celsius, so it must be working prop...

I can only anser the third question, the best fanned card would probably be a fanless card with a 92 or 120mm nexus fan(or something similarly quiet) blowing on it. For instance gigabyte 6800gt has a fan with a similar heatsink as the passive 6800, but the thing is not supposed to be remotely quiet....

I haven't had my 6600gt long enough to install an OS and stress it, but expect high temperatures. I've seen reports of 80-100 degrees celsius at heavy loads. Passive things always get warm/somwhat hot/hot. My phantom is quite warm/hot, i will do some things to improve airflow, but it is staying at a...

This is my opinion, because i can never be hundred percent sure.

The good models are from 2005 and have purple quality stickers on the side(mine has 5 stickers), blue stickers were used on the older phantom's.

EDIT: 2005 models have a D05xxxxxxxxxx serial(random amount of x'es)

Efficiency should be better with 230/240 VAC than with 110/115 VAC. Adding (A)PFC which most psu's in europe have roughly negates that advantage. (not sure about the exact numbers)

If the gpu is 100 degrees, then the heatsink should be too hot too touch.(IMO) A cold or barely warm heatsink is not a good sign in my eyes. Is it installed properly?

Some of the confusion arises from the fact that the S12-500 comes with PCIe power connectors, and the S12-430 does not. You can purchase molex to PCIe converters, but you'll need two molex every PCIe plug (so for SLI setups, you'll need 4 molex). According to graphics card manufacturers, when a mol...

Recent psu's have 2 12v rails, who supply 12v independently. The first rail powers everything but the cpu. The second rail powers the cpu, you can't combine the two. (some psu's such as the tagan u22 series have a switch which connects the rails and turns them into one) But then the advantage of hav...

There are very few psu's with a switch to turn a dual rail into a single one.

The 2nd 12v rail is only used for the cpu(4 pin 12v connecter), the other rail feeds everything else.

The big difference is that the phantom is a completely new design, while silverstone themselves admitted they based their psu on an existing model. The 2005 phantom's seem to have much less problems. The first batch of phantom's had issues, issues probably not related to heat. ONCE you get a good ph...

Higher data density compared to samsung p80,(100+GB platters instead of 80 GB) three platters instead of two platters. Samsung generally has higher latency. Could be more reasons, but these are a few.

With a seperate fan you can put it somewhere with a less restrictive airflow. Which means your fan can run slower and produce less noise.
