Someone also mentioned that the 200GB Samsung seems to all have Nidec motors.

The Barracuda IV comes in 80GB capacity as well. I just removed mine from an old system last night, and was admiring its build quality (shield over PCB, which presumably is a victim of cost cutting).

I'd say 17" is the minimum, and that's iffy. Make it 18" to be safe.

Your IDE cable (to the optical drives) and the ATX cable is going to cross. Not a problem, just need to spend a little effort routing them cleanly.

Molex to the optical drives can be easily extended if it is not long enough.

I've given some thought about this. I think a better solution would be to add an extra magnet and steel plate to the bottom of the case. I'm not sure why it's not there - it looks like the door is meant to have 3 magnets, but only one is installed. Another possibility is to find a flat rigid length ...

If you're powering them off the molex, getting 5V to the fan is easy. Get a molex pin removal tool, and swap the yellow and red wire on the fan , and if you intend to use the female molex pass-through to power other components, swap that set of pins too. The intention here is so that you won't accid...

The probability of a hard drive failing is X, where X is between 0 and 1. The probability of one or more drives failing in a two drive array, where the prob...

Accuracy of temperature : it all depends on where the temperature is being measured. I don't know for sure, but if I'm to guess, I'd say its among the electronics in the interface board at the bottom of the drive. Try a couple of different programs - dtemp, speedfan, see if the temp readings agree. ...

You probably could destroy the pins somehow, and then glue the heatsink on. If they are plastic pins, you can probably cut them off, push the pin remnants away, and mount using new plastic pins. But, seriously, you're not doing yourself a favor by trying to save time here. Take your time, do it rig...

I may be mistaken, but I think beefier ram sinks merely mean that it'll take longer for them to heat up (and cool down) since they don't dissipate heat any better. How well a heat sink dissipates heat depends on the surface area and the airflow over them. Why not check to see if heat is the issue? O...
