Do people really do stuff like that? That's like trading in your 2011 Camry for the 2012 model. Except it's a lot more work.kenyee wrote:anyone upgrade from the R3 to the R4?

Re: Fractal Design Define R4 launches
FWIW, I read numerous complaints about the grommets falling out on the motherboard tray side of the case. None fell out as I pushed large cables from the PSU for example through. So they did in fact improve that. I had one pop out when assembling my Define Mini, but it wasn't a big deal. You do hav...

Re: Fractal Design Define R4 launches
You can mount a 2.5" SSD with double sided foam mounting tape. I'd do that before using a mount that requires removing the motherboard to remove the SSD.

Re: First Impressions: Asus P8Z77-M PRO mATX LGA1155 motherb
I hadn't realized this, but apparently the BIOS settings and Fan Xpert+ settings interact. Last time I powered up the PC I was forced into the BIOS setup because the CPU fan speed was reported as low. I set the CPU fan speed profile to 'Turbo' and now looking in Fan Xpert+ I see that this setting ha...

Re: First Impressions: Asus P8Z77-M PRO mATX LGA1155 motherb
What speed were the Fractal Design case fans in your Define Mini? Mine are apparently the 1300 RPM fans that now show on Fractal Design's web site as 'R2' models. They were tested in Fan Xpert+ having speeds of about 1330 RPM. With my ear at the case, I can barely hear the two of them running in the...

Re: Quiet cooler for i7-3770k /w space constraints
Are you sure about the clearance? The photos that I've seen of the case show the side fan to be low enough in the door to clear the CPU cooler. Google reviews and photos of the case. Many of them show very large coolers installed. http://www.bjorn3d.com/Material/revimages/case/NZXT_Tempest_EVO/nzxt-...

LGA 775 cooler?
I have a several year old TYAN LGA 775 server board with a Xeon E3120 running as a home file server. What's a popular, quiet cooler for this socket that is moderately priced (< $35)? I think one with a 92mm fan should be sufficient. Is it better to use a horizontal cooler for LGA 775, instead of a t...

Re: BIOS Fan Warning
The PWM % refers to the duty cycle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duty_cycle, essentially 100% is constant 12 V and then it gets "chopped up" to achieve a drive similar to a lower constant voltage. The system doesn't need to be aware of fan RPM to adjust the duty cycle. Ah, I see. I thought PWM fan ...

No reason to spend more than $50 for what you want, with some good quiet coolers at the $30-35 level.

Re: Fractal Design Define R4 launches
Heh, just noticed this... different fan too - 11 blades instead of 7. Not just a different number of blades, a whole different size. 14cm. Which could partly explain the extra plastic on the dust filter, but I still think they could have done it less restrictive. Ah, yes, I forgot that this was a 1...

Does anyone make fan vent covers?
I'm building a file server in an older Cooler Master RC-590 case. The case has two top fan openings, two door fan openings, and even a fan opening in the door behind the motherboard tray. I want to cover these fan vents. I can use duct tape or something similar, but would like to find something neat...

Re: Can this be done in a small case?
- I'm willing to undervolt and underclock it to the point that it performs like a much lower class APU if that's what it takes to keep it cool. If that's easily done with the CPU, you should try it. The M350 case is almost completely perforated. I can't imagine cooling problems if you have a CPU co...

Re: Small, silent, HTPC
If you can afford one, these fanless HTPC cases with heatpipes and external heatsinks are beautiful. There are a few companies that make different variations of them. Sometimes you're limited to using only one of several different motherboards, because of the heatpipe arrangement, so do some researc...

Linux web server doing what exactly?
You know you can get pretty decent shared hosting of a web site for $5/month or less these days, right? Complete with canned apps, unlimited email accounts, etc. etc.

Probably because there's very little market for 80 to 150W power supplies today, except for miniITX systems where a full sized PSU couldn't fit anyway.Olaf van der Spek wrote:Why can't / don't they put the pico PSU and brick components inside a standard ATX PSU form factor?

I'm trying to decide the same thing and am looking at the Mugen 3, but with two caveats: I'm using a dedicated GPU I'm putting it in a matx case, most likely the Silverstone Temjin TJ08-E. Motherboard will likely be an Asus P8Z77-M Pro Am I likely to run into any clearance issues? Height-wise, I th...

Re: Advice for choosing SSD
I installed my first SSD yesterday in a new Win7 Pro system. The SSD is a Samsung 830 128GB. After installing the OS and maybe about 1/4th of the programs that I'll eventually have installed, there are 51 GB used, 68 GB free. I was hoping to use part of the SSD for a fast work space for audio and vi...

Re: BIOS Fan Warning
OK, I've played around a bit with Fan Xpert+ now. ...but why is it spinning the fan at just 430-500 RPM? Because with a cooler like the Mugen 3 the fan does not need to run any faster than that to keep the processor temperature stable. While that may be true, I don't believe it's the reason that Fan...

Re: BIOS Fan Warning
I just installed my ASUS P8Z77-M PRO with a Mugen 3 (Scythe 120mm PWM fan) and I'm seeing the same thing. The warning is easy enough to figure out, but why is it spinning the fan at just 430-500 RPM? The case fans, two Fractal Design 120mm, which I believe are 1000 RPM fans, are spinning at about 94...

This forum needs a wiki where we could all contribute and keep these types of lists up to date. They might not be the official SPCR recommended cases/fans/etc, but a wiki would draw upon a much broader base of experience and knowledge.
